i just started guild wars 2 last week. im almost done with the sylvari starting zone and have cleared out the map and done all the quests. problem is that im level 16 and the recommended level for what i assume is the last quest is 19. did i miss something or is the last quest supposed to be a few levels higher than you?

Nah, it is. You're just meant to level up until you get there.

Try playing with friends/guild to make it faster and use food!

That seems right. There are more story quests past level 19, though. You are probably nearing the end of an 'arc', or in other words, a significant chapter in your character's story.

It's maybe the last quest of the area, but there are plenty of other area's for higher levels up until lv 80.

I recommend going to a different starting zone. Charr is a lot of fun in my opinion. You can get there by going to lion's arch. In the southern area there are a bunch of portals leading to different race's main cities.

Unless you spend a rather large chunk of time repeating Dynamic Events, the story missions are bound to get higher level than you are on occasions.

You might want to go north of Caledon Forest, into the level 15-25 area

Or do WvWvW, leveling there is rather fast if you manage to stay alive.

You can always go level up some more in the other races starting areas or move onto the next zone. I'm level 30 and I haven't done a single story quest or left the starting areas. Also that's only clearing 3 of the 5 while avoiding a lot of battles.

I know that's not very far but my computer died so I can't play it til it's fixed ;_;

You can do the other race starter zones.

Your level is scaled down to the zone you are in so you still get XP for content you would have otherwise outleveled.

What this guy said.

Not sure if it's changed but the way i originally did it.

Pull up the PVP menu, teleport to a battle, jump through portals till you get to lions arch.
Then at lions arch there is a circle of portals taking you to every starting area.

It's worth picking one other starter area and work your way between the 2 when one becomes to hard etc.

You can also venture into crafting, which gives pretty considerate amounts of experience, or go to WvW. Alternatively you can just do the quest - at least early on it doesn't matter that much if you're a bit underleveled.

Yup cooking is the way I did it, it's much easier to get materials for. You will need a lot of inventory space though !

Coming from someone who has a level 80, there are 3 key things to level; or 3 best ways to level. In order they are:

1. Crafting. It may not seem like it at the early levels, but crafting begins paying of around level 30 if you have kept up on it. Collecting resources and crafting can easily yield 3+ levels. Try to always be able to build better gear than you can wear/use. This also helps you not end up having constant outdated gear.

2. Exploration. This one has already been covered.

3. Events. These payoff equal to their difficulty for you and are pretty self explanatory. At level 16, doing a level 5 event is a bit more effort than its worth. However, getting into a 16-25 zone and doing a level 20 event is worth more than the what you'll put into it.

Those are my main focuses on my alts I have made.

P.S. Leveling actually gets easier. 1-20 is a hurdle. 20-40 is a little easier. 40-60 happens pretty quick. Then 60-80 is cake.

Crafting, if you take two disciplines, will eventually account for 25% of your total experience gain assuming you max both by 80. It's a major stream of experience.

If you're going to have an experience shortfall in the game, it'll be in the first two zones. By about level 30 your zone choices become more staggered, and it becomes more natural to sidebar into new zones without feeling like you're side tracking into other newbie areas you weren't meant to visit. As a result, the game opens up more, and you'll likely not find yourself feeling under leveled. Definitely keep up with crafting though, it's a pretty essential xp boost.

You can also spackle in half a level here and there by fully exploring one of the game's cities, which are all on a hub off Lion's Arch. That's another way to get little boosts early on, with no combat required.

re: cooking.

It gets very expensive compared to the other crafting professions, better off saving it for your next character, by then you'll have accumulated the funds to power through it.

Like everyone said, explore all 6 cities and the 5 starter zones, you'll find more than enough to do to get you up to the 20-25 range

Always, always explore the other races' zones too. Otherwise you'll be under-leveled the whole time.
Actually, home city + crafting + clearing your starter zone map has always been enough to get me to the appropriate level to move on (usually 15-18), and that's with only one crafting skill on my alts.

Exploring a second starter zone can be beneficial, especially if you're in the 20's and finding your character's power is lagging a bit and want a diminished challenge, or if you want an alternative to exploring a 2nd city, or if you're skipping crafting for some reason, but it's definitely not necessary by any means.
