Guild Wars: Still worth buying?

Ok so I have never played a mmorpg before but i have been reading a lot of previews for Guild Wars 2 and it sounds pretty interesting. Plus the lack of a subscription fee makes me think its a good game to try out the genre with. So my question is it worth picking up the original (complete edition is availabe pretty cheap on the internet) and giving that a play before the sequel comes out? Is there a decent sized community still playing or has everyone migrated to newer games?

I'm sure you could find a few people to play with, but I'm pretty sure you're going to be playing on your own with bots.

I've been meaning to replay through it, but I just know it's going to be dead.

It's old now so the game is quite dead, it'll be hard to find a group to play through the missions with, but it's really good if you could get a few friends interested and play it all with them. The only thing people do in PvE now is all the high end stuff for rare drops, or hard mode missions that you can't even play until you've completed the campaign on normal mode first. The PvP is similar, mainly dominated by the top guilds.

I'd still recommend buying it though because it'll be your first MMO, which is awesome because you won't have a fucking clue what's going on and everything is shiny. I played through the game on my own when I bought it and still enjoyed it, and there's a lot of replayability to keep you playing until GW2.

For the content you're getting, it's definitely worth the price.

You can shove stuff like minipets etc into the hall of monuments which unlocks more crazy shizzle for your character in Guild wars 2, so yes, it is still worth buying and playing.

The set up means that Prophecies is basically dead with everyone in Nightfall and Eye of the North. Nightfall might be worth getting but I would just wait until GW2.

Good to hear, as I'm installing Nightfall now. :)

Would anyone say Eye of the North is still worth getting? Suppose I can wait to see what people say in game when I hit 20 though...

Sweet! Hope there are still people there for you but I'm sure there are as it's the only place to make new PvE characters.
I waited too long to get Factions so I was woefully behind when I entered it. Was too tough to get back into it before Nightfall. I love the game so much though so GW2 is gonna be soooweeeet.

Well, I'm still playing it (when I can), as I got the trilogy back in April when it went on sale on Steam. EotN was just released on Steam as well last week and on sale, but I've yet to play it. It's true that the community might not be as alive and kicking as it used to be, but I think it's still worth a try! =)

If you plan on getting GW2 then yeah, buy Eye of the North. In EotN there is the Hall of Monuments, which will give you bonuses in GW2.
