So I'm thinking of getting into guildwars. Mainly because I have a MMO itch I dont want to pay by the month to scratch.

My girlfriends sister got it yesterday and from what I saw of her playing it looked great. The graphics were good, the classes looked intresting and the story was cool. I also like the idea of "roleplay or pvp" characters. I can see myself switching between the two depending on how much time I have.

So does anyone play and have any cool tales to yell? Any tips or warning?

Please leave you "zomg grind is ghey" at the door because I really dont want to hear it...

Anyway.. Discuss!

I wouldn't count Guildwars as an MMO, more just an MO. Your group is within its own instance for as long as you are in the group, so while its a great experience for story its not an MMO persay.

It is however good fun.

I got prophecies and the eye of the north expansion pack. It is great fun if you have people to play with. Theo is right though, its less an MMO and more like a single play RPG with really good co op. The game is fun because i relies more on you skill sets and to some degree your gear than it does on level. The level cap is 20, after you reach that you still gain exp but when it fills up you gain skill points to use to learn new skills, and there A LOT of them per class.

Henchmen and heroes (AI controlled allies) are rather helpful most of the time and are good if you are soloing. LOTS of quests, the story is good (i only have the prophecies and and GWEN) and their missions are fun. Fighting mobs can be really tricky but fun if you got a good team as there will be times when you fight enemies that are higher than lvl20. I is a game of teamwork and guild battle and PVP are loads of fun.

If you ever wanna play I'm always up for a game, wouldn't mind playing with fellows escapists instead of always playing with my guild/clan mates. My character is Ratix Khan if you ever wanna party up.

Yea the grind is certainly minimal and more localized to the real special items. It's kind of masked by the ease and enjoyable gameplay. You can easily uber up your gear with runs and what not instead of spending a couple hours finding that gold or green item that turns out to be for a class that your NOT grrr I hate that.

Personally of all the role play adventures and MMO's I've played, I've gotten into Guild Wars the the deepest and liked it the best. Personally, I liked the Factions story line better than the main story, but still not bad.

And the character customization is easy, and navigating through your class is simple.

Also all your informations screens are at your mercy. Have them all up, have them all hidden, put them where you want (I hate when my screen is cluttered with stuff I don't need).

I definitely recommend it over WoW, because I also don't want to pay per month.

Oh and it also has a fairly good community. In all my time playing I can count on one hand the amount of assholes I'v met. The crafting system is great due to it's ease and simplicity, and it's probably the best MMO to be taylor made for your preference. PVE person? well you can go out and not have to deal with camping douches or murderers. PVP? jump right in but playing through the PVE unlocks more skills for your PVP profile. So it's a win win either way.

It is a good game. I have 2 accounts of all expansions and I'm quite happy with it. I won't let myself touch a real MMO because of the monthly fee, and I feel this game works quite well without it. I think that those who are accustomed to playing with a fee are going to find it lacking in what that fee buys you: Social interaction. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of people to play with, but don't expect to see another soul in the game world to help you out if you are getting your ass kicked. On the otherhand, that's also a good thing as no one will steal your loot.

Funny, I'm responding to this while playing Guild Wars.

I for one love the game. I usually don't like MMO's, since they usually take far too much time and dedication that I can't allow myself to put into a game. Not to mention they suck up your money with their monthly charges, forcing to me keep playing or end the game for myself. Another problem I find is the lack of story, sub-par graphics and level design, and repetitive quests with lots of grind. Guild Wars has practically none of this.

As mentioned above, it IS more of a singleplayer game than anything, and I would most definitely recommend playing through with a friend if possible. One is enough usually, simple for the interaction and so you can fill your team out with heroes (you'll see once you get them). Nevertheless, 99% quests remarkably seem to have little to no grind, and many can usually be completed in a single run if you're organized.

The game is beautiful and diverse, each area having it's own unique style to it. With crisp, clear graphics and models that stand out, you will quickly learn to decipher classes, weapons, and even specialties just by looking at a character. Not only this, but the system requirements are low for a game this pretty.

When you play through you'll probably notice the heavy symbolism of certain characters and areas, and other inside jokes. If you don't take it too seriously, even the occasional bugs can be hilarious most of the time. Its things like that is why I'm still playing Guild Wars after a year, and have purchased every expansion for it.

All in all I don't have much bad to say about it, but depending on your taste in games you may not enjoy it as much as I have. Still, it's a fun game and certainly worth the low price tag if you want to give it a try.

Guild wars is allright, definately worth the money. Guild Wars 2 might be coming out at the end of 2009. From what I've read, its going to be great.

I'd recommend it to anyone, anywhere.
All of its systems are very unique: You have profession-specific attributes, and profession-specific skills tied to those same attributes, which makes every profession unique. And bringing 8 skills into combat is the best idea I've seen in years.
I love how the grind is completely optional; you never NEED to grind. Of course, if you want that funky Dread Mask, you'll have to farm those Diessa Chalices which drop very rarely.
It's great how GW actually HAS a story, and doesn't just drop you into an ongoing conflict, like, oh, say, a certain very popular MMORPG by the guys who made Diablo.
I also ADORE the way that no character can do everything on his own. Every person in a team of 8 counts, and replacing just one can change the strategy very much.
