Well, to answer the actual question I do think the entire plastic insturment game genere is dying out. It's been a few years, all the kiddies are growing up, and the newest kiddies don't want to be just like the other kiddies.

Add to it that where originally you had a lot of big time music celebrities coming out and talking about how wonderful the genere was, your seeing more and more big name people coming out and speaking against it. Apparently Jimmy Page (I think that is the name) from Led Zepplin really kind of ripped the idea, and Prince (irregardless of what you think of him, he is a big name) did he same thing.

The point being that in the time you put into mastering some of these songs on a worthless plastic guitar you probably could have learned to play a guitar for real and do some of the same songs.

Of course I suspect a bit of it has to do with successful musicians who are still loaded from what they did, and those who partied or snorted away all their profits and are happy to be able to get a few bucks from DLs and game liscencing.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think this will ever truely die out, but I think it's past the "fad" phase, it's already peaked as a phenomena and there is nowhere for it to go but down. I expect it will be just another game genere, and one of the things that some people will love, and others will hate vehemently as opposed to it being "OMG Plastic Rocker games are sooooo kewl!" like in the last few years.

Also consider that it's become the stuff of fandom. The music/air guitar fantasy drew a lot of people in who weren't gamers to begin with. But then of course you had all the gamers doing it too, and at a certain point I think the non-gamers look at the basement dwelling, pizza-faced geeks, jamming away with overpriced plastic guitars, go "OMG, was that me for the last year or so" and run away from it as fast as they can go like happens whenever a few mainstream or maybe even "cool" people are temporarily drawn into the black pit of nerd-dom.

As the Omega Nerd I am quite familiar with the phenomena. Simply put fanboys tend to ruin things for non-fanboys who look at them and rush to seperate themselves from that extreme.

The playlists are the problem, its just terible. I got friends around to play GH4 (Because we are sad like that) and after the first 10 songs we said fk this and went back to Rock Band.

The genres still going strong but guitar hero is starting to become the sonic of the music sim genre, really good when it came out but its recent games are just turds.

I must be one of the few Guitar Hero lovers left out there. First game I bought was GH3 and I loved it, Slipknot, Disturbed, Poison, AFI, Slayer, Tenacious D, Scorpions all in the main setlist, Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage and Inflames in the bonus tracks, I was hooked and still play it regularly. Hell I got GH2 off ebay simply because of Freebird.

The only upside Rockband has imo is better DLC, but of course you have to pay for it.

Looking at the upcomming setlist for 5, I have to say I have virtually no interest in it, the only stuff that looks "promising" is the rumoured bands, but I guess it all comes down to musical preferance. I know if I could make a GH setlist it would be for a very niche audience.

I don't really enjoy the Guitar Hero games (or Rockband anymore, thanks to overplaying it) anymore, as the novelty has worn off. Kind of like how, as a kid, I thought Dance Dance Revolution was amazing, and bought it and some dance pads, and played it off and on before just letting it die. The thing that made the concept of the game "fun" no longer exist for me, so I get bored of it beyond playing it with some friends every now and again.

Besides, I only ever recognize a few songs from ANY of the games, so I never find them fun D:

I do think they should start doing genre specific releases. GH5 looks fucking awful.
I don't mind band specific releases, if I don't like the band I won't bother with a game. But Metallica is all kinds of kick ass.

It doesn't help that they've moved away from the rock, metal and more annoyingly blues roots of the original games to get the mainstream dollar. I don't expect every game to be a full on thrash fest but atleast give those of us who were there from the start the music that we love.
I may just wait it out for RB3 and hope they go down the rock / metal route.

Like all party games in the world, it will become unpopular. You'll forget it after the next gimmick the industry can throw a you.

Ha! They have Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash? That's hilarious for whatever reason (not that I hate country music, I don't get why people hate it though).

Yea, that and a ton of other B songs from B bands, some A's.
And lots of C's.

losING? It's lost. Not only is Rock Band smoother and more intuitive, it also has a solid base playlist, good online support, and isn't run through the ringer, having only four games including unplugged and the upcoming Beatles game compared to the eight(at least) Guitar Hero games, also including the DS game and the upcoming(cringe) Van Halen.
And that's not run through the ringer? 4 games since November 07 isn't run through the ringer? What happened to the days when you'd have to wait a good couple years for a very well made sequel? The whole genre is dying, the novelty wore off a long time ago. I don't hate the games, they're fun to play, but I wouldn't ever buy more than one, simply because I'd rather play my real guitar after i've had my limited fun with the game. Not only that, but there isn't enough variation from game to game, and using big name bands to sell the games for you? Just an excuse to make more money while creating the same game as the last 3.

Just let Guitar Hero die! Rock Band is better in every way because it was made by the people who created Guitar Hero!
Just curious: Was that irony intended?

Also, I've gotten pretty bored of them. I guess the novelty is just kind of wearing off, but if I can get 4 people in the same room, I'll still play it from time to time.

Harmonix hasn't made Guitar Hero games for 2 years. That distinction falls upon Neversoft, and they've not done a good job in those two years.

As for my thoughts on the subject, the genre will slow down eventually because there simply isn't enough music from different genres that is good enough to include in new iterations of the games as we get further into the future. Instead, I think the new songs and whatnot will all come from DLC because its a more efficient way of keeping a franchise profitable after it's prime.

Harmonix is, was, and always will be the champion of rythm games. That is why Activision could never stand a chance. Ever notice how Guitar Hero's decline started when Harmonix dropped the title? Yeah...

: And Konami can suck an egg. Those aren't true rythm games!

Rock Band is definitely superior, but I don't think the setlist for GH 5 is that bad. Sure, they've got some stinkers, but they have some great songs as well. It's uneven, but it isn't uniformly awful.
