This is my first official review, so don't be to hard on me.
Guitar Hero and I have always been on good terms with each other. It provided me with days of enjoyment(and frustration) with good music to boot. I would spend hours shredding like a monster, and then spend a few more trying to piece back together my guitar when I got to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." I could never say that I didn't at least have fun with any song any of the previous games. When Guitar Hero World Tour came out, I could say that about 50 or so times. Just by glancing at the set list I could see that they started to "sell out" if you will. Not to mention at least 20 of the songs were already on Rock Band 2, which I consider to be a much better game. Well, I figured I'd buy it when the price dropped(or plummeted in this games case) and I got it for 20 buck not long after it came out, which I'm guessing reflects on the quality of the game.
Gameplay - The guitar is like every other guitar hero game, fun. I will say that the drums are more or less fun on any song you play, mostly do to their realism. Singing would also be fun, if this game was capable of allowing you to do so. I still don't understand how it determines if you're hitting the right notes or not. I think the gremlins inside my xbox just roll a 72 sided die, and if it lands on heads then I get to not fail! Absolute perfection on vocals will get you something like a 70%, and anything else will lead to epic failure.
Set List - Most of the songs are either incredibly boring or not challenging at all. I beat the game only failing out on a few songs, and I'm honestly not too great. It's like one massive grindquest until you get to the last few gigs, then GHWT is kind enough to provide you with some entertainment for your 60$...that is if you actually paid full price in which case I'd have to question whether or not you even LOOKED at the songs before buying it. At least half of them I recall hearing on a pop radio station on more than one occasion, which is certainly not a good thing. It seems like they abandoned the whole guitar HERO aspect when they put Tokio Hotel and Paramore on it. And what the hell happened to Iron Maiden? They were my favorite band.
Selling Points - To be completely honest, the best part of this game is the music studio. It's so much fun pounding on the guitar, creating guitar solos that even the most advanced of Guitar Heroists couldn't pass. Oh, and the best songs on the game are the ones that can be downloaded for GHtunes...FOR FREE!!!!! Pretty much anything you want can be found on here, completely negating the original set list if you ask me. The drums are almost a real instrument, and are great for practice if you ever intend on playing a real instrument. You'll also find a few shining gems of songs that will only seem better compared to the rest of them.
So, should you buy this game? Yes.
Why? Because it's cheap. You can get one off ebay in perfect condition for about 15 bucks, which is worth it for the good songs that are on it and GHtunes. However, if you actually have any intention of playing the career, then I suggest you buy Rock Band 2.
If you found this review to be boring, you have shared in the pain of even touching this game. Congratulations!!
