So...why does everyone like the guitarists they've picked?

I'm a fan of (in no particular order)

Joey Eppard (3)
For intricate rhythm parts, excellent songwriting, and a good sense of feel in his music.
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (At the Drive-In, Mars Volta)
Inertiatic ESP.
Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits, Solo)
Has a great sense of melody. Sultans of Swing, from, start to finish, is one of my favorite guitar songs.
Paul Waggoner/Dustie Waring (Between the Buried and Me)
BTBAM is one of the few bands I know that can play downtuned metal, prog rock, and bossa nova in the same album and make it work. Intricate rhythms and melodic solos contribute to a huge sound.
Paul Masvidal (Death, Cynic)
The guitar playing on Traced in Air is mindblowing from start to finish. It's lightning fast and technical at times, but still retains a sense of atmosphere.
Duane Allman (Allman Bros.)
The Grateful Dead may have been the quintessential jam band, but the Allmans were undoubtedly the superior musicians. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is a great instrumental jam, and he's also responsible for the iconic riff in Clapton's Layla.
His latter-day replacements (Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks) are also fantastic.

I do not really have a top ten, but I will name, in no particular order, some of my favorite guitar players.

-Jim "Reverend Horton" Heath (Reverend Horton Heat)
-George Harrison (The Beatles)
-East Bay Ray (Dead Kennedys)
-Wes Borland (Sure Limp Bizkit sucked, but he was a cool guitarist and his other stuff is cool)
-Mike Ness (Social Distortion and Solo)
-Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan)

Wow guys. Really? Seriously? Jeebus Christ you're all fake elitists. Listen to 'real' (creative, a-la, not STOLEN RIFFS) guitar players. Hmmph.
I don't remember anyone other than you saying that Joe Satriani was uncreative, Mr. Troll. He's a widely praised genius. And uh, stolen riffs? I'd like to know where Andy McKee gets his riffs from. Because whoever he steals them from must be a god of some form.

Care to show us yours if ours are so bad then? Go on, I dare ya.

I have no idea who almost every single person mentioned is.

Anyway I'm just gonna say Pete Townshend and walk away.

Gee, it's a bit hard to define what makes a great guitarist for me. All sorts of things I guess. I'd rather let the guitarists speak for themselves. Enjoy these... or not...

1. Mimby

2. Bob Log III

3. K.K. Null

4. Jón Þór Birgisson

5. Scott Ian

6. Gabby La La

7. Douglas P.

8. Tom G. Warrior

9. Kristin Hersh

10. Tony Iommi

In no particular order:

Peter Witchers
Ola Frenning
Jesper Strömblad
Michael Angelo Batio
Alexi Laiho
Mark Knopfler
Per Nilsson
Jonas Kjellgren
Eric Clapton
Kristian (A friend of mine. He's really good, but he's only been playing for 2,5 years or so, so naturally he's vastly inferior to the aforementioned guitarists regarding technical skill, but you did say favorite guitarists ;)

Ohhhh come on now. Just because I don't agree with the selections thus far doesn't make me a troll. It's my attitude that does that. :) There was a touch of sarcasm in what I wrote of course, and I didn't mean to imply that they were all bad guitarist, in fact most that have been mentioned are great guitarists, I just have different tastes, and being a guitarist myself for almost 20 years, I suppose the 'old trusty famous/good guitar players' has left my mind and been replaced by people I've met or live around me who are both technically insanely awesome and hugely creative. Whoever said Vai still definately gets my vote. I do truly think he's on his own musically. I like that.
