Not related, but I'm learning to play acoustic guitar and I don't know how to keep notes from playing when I lift my finger of the strings (like to change frets). It creates a kind of ugly background noise behind the songs I play. Is there some kind of technique to keep this from happening, or is it kind of a given for acoustic guitars? Thanks.

Anyway, I'm gonna dedicate my post to Rodrigo y Gabriela. They're obviously not my entire top ten, but they don't get much attention and they're really amazing guitarists.

Pretty much everyone else has given all of my favorites a nod, with the exception of Brian Setzer.

Ace Frehley - Billy Gibbons - Ted Nugent - Angus Young - Keith Richards - Jerry Garcia -

Chet Atkins - Ernie Isley - John Fogarty - Eddie Van Halen

In no order but all super-innovative with plenty of imitators.

Try muting the troublesome string with another finger or the palm of your strumming hand, whichever works without hampering other notes you're hitting.

I really like the noises that Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips gets out of his guitar, but I am reluctant to call him a guitarist. He plays pretty much everything.

This is what I like. (Buckethead would have made it if I listened to him more)

Also if I was better at guitar I'd be number one.

Why Tony Iommi?
Seriously? The guitarist from Black Sabbath (aka the band that practically invented metal) is Mr. Iommi. The guy wrote more awesome riffs on their first few albums than most bands will ever hope to crank out in their careers.

My own list would go something like this:

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Joe Satriani
Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer)
Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher (Mastodon)
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Buckethead
Paul Gilbert
Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age. Plus, a Scottish dude once said I look like him)
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Matt Pike (High on Fire)

You might not be putting your fingers down hard enough. Acoustic strings are much thicker then electric strings and it might just be your wrist muscles and finger tip skin getting used to it
That work?

Well, I've never been the biggest Black Sabbath fan. I just don't like his stuff as much as the guys on my list. I dunno if he is top ten material for me.

Also I take serious issue with having Dave Mustaine on a list with no Kirk Hammett, or even with having Dave Mustaine at all. He plays the guitar proficiently, but there is no real feeling behind it. Megadeath is only intermittently good for me. The songs often start out well, but devolve into something unpleasant. (Also this doesn't influence my decision, but his singing blows.)
