So one time i was having dinner at my friends house. throughout the meal, everyone kept saying "there's gullible written on the ceiling" and i was like no way i'm not that gullible. Anyways, it turns out gullible WAS written on a post-it note on the ceiling. So my question to you, fellow escapists, is have you ever thought you "weren't that gullible" and it turns out that whatever it was was true, or am i just an idiot?

You're an idiot!

Well, I'm sure a fair proportion of the initial victims on the Escapist were gullible enough to press the red button... even after being warned of what would happen.

Not at all, that happens at my school as well.
It's kinda stupid to me, but whatever, someone gets their jollies from it.

In all seriousness, I did the same thing as you once since someone went to the trouble of writing gullible on the ceiling above the place where my friends and I hang out at school.

The thing is, that was a double-bind. They'll still get a laugh whether you look or not. This doesn't make you stupid. In fact, they obviously knew you were smart if they went to the trouble of posting that note, since it would take an added step to get a joke out of it.

Its no fair! I am a badge collector! I can't miss a badge, no matter the price! Also, I don't think that makes you gullible if you do it, and you know what will happen.

By this point, I just immediately take people at their word if it doesn't cost me anything to be wrong.

Why exactly is it "gullible" to believe people who have no real reason to lie to you?

That's very true. Are you in any way related to Confucius? BTW, if you say gullible really slowly it sounds like green beans.

Just call me Ren.

Actually, I'm not all that knowledgeable about Confucian philosophy. I can remember a few general points from the Analects, some of Mencius and Xun Zi's philosophy (I love the latter, he's firmly Confucian but a little more cynical and secular), the concepts of li, ren, and junzi, and the five basic relationships, but that's about it. I could swear I'm forgetting two concepts altogether.

I told my friend a while back that it wasnt in the dictionary, and he was like, no wai it totally is, and actually looked it up in the dictionary (we were in english class)
anyway we're all pissing ourselves laughing.. he goes bright red and he says... uh i thought i might have been a dialect thing, and thats why it wasnt in the dictionary :(

We still laugh at him for it :)

Indeed, I find that this is the best policy as well. I don't get pranked or hazed or other stupid stuff like that because people seem to realize I'm not the sort of person to be amused by it in the least. I won't throw a fit, I won't provide any entertainment, I'll just not have anything to do with you any more.

What I don't get are the people who, in order to find some sense of self-worth, feel that they have to "put something over" on other people. Well here's the lowdown, folks: if you successfully "put one over" on somebody, that doesn't make you smart. It just makes you a jackass.

Which dictionary? "It" won't be in many abridged dictionaries to save space, but it's certainly in "the" dictionary [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/it].

Touche... :p
Just to clarify, I was posting in a thread about the word gullible, so I assumed most people would assume that's what I was referring to when I said 'it' :)

But sending him to look "it" up in the dictionary would have been so much more funny. :D
