I am aware that most of you have no idea what GunZ is; but that's great! Reviews are to introduce people to games. I am also aware of you foolish people who dropped the game so fast after downloading and playing it. SHAME!
There are many things to learn (and enjoy) about it. And it's Free!
For starters, let me tell you about the story.
THERE IS (almost) NONE.
Er, alright, lemme tell you about the cheerful communi-
THE COMMUNITY WILL RIP YOUR HEAD OFF UNLESS YOU BECOME AS WHINY, STUCK UP, AND FILLED WITH RAGE AS THEY ARE. IF YOU ARE AS STUCK UP AS THEM, YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF.
Why would I point you to a pile of shit like this?
Easy, the gameplay!
GunZ is the freakiest, broken, and downright unbalanced FPS out there. Shotguns are the most broken, and overused because they handled the lag so horribly, that unless you're in the same bloody state/country, you HAVE to lead your shots by a few bodies or so.
Not to mention that this game has more glitches than...uh...actually I think this is the glitchiest game I've ever played. Not the most broken, but definitely the glitchiest.
BUT!
Oddly enough, the glitches changed the gameplay to the point that it became FUN.

Notice the way that everyone bounces off the walls at super speed. And spams their shotguns everywhere.
This permeates almost every game mode. (which are basically just DM's) And out of 10 maps or so, only 3-4 are used regularly.(Because so many people have really crappy computers...or follow the crowd. The more open maps have less lag for the former)
Now obviously, since everyone can fly ar-
WRONG!
...And personally, I think that's a good thing. Not just EVERYONE can move quickly. Not just EVERYONE can use the sword effectively. You have to train your muscles. I'm dead serious, you have to train your fingers to not only 'tap' the mouse in rhythm accurately for upwards of 10-15 minutes at a time (at the extreme), but you'll ALWAYS be dashing. And dashing requires you to double tap the movement keys (WASD is default) and probably jumping. (hitting the space bar is also default) You should be hitting 2-3 keys per second. For hours.
At the PRO level at least.
Hey wait, ANYONE can shoot, right? I mean, it's still a FPS! Surel-
WRONG!
Even though it takes at least 20 or so bullets to kill someone, once you hit the higher levels...which is where the real game starts...you can die in less than a second. From full health to death in under a second. Now, sure, you have to be standing still, or your opponent(s) need very good aim (and luck), but this game is the ultimate adrenaline rush for FPS's.
Because you won't get much of the 'Covert OPS' bit while sneaking up on someone (because you're damn noisy), and can't realistically snipe, you basically HAVE to jump into a Melee. And when you're in that Melee, you need to be EVASIVE. Hence the previous paragraph.
Personally, I think that is where the game shines. It doesn't shine MUCH, but dammit there's something there.
Why does it shine?
Because it takes skill. You can't just thrash on your keyboard and expect to do anything more than jump at a wall. I've been playing for 2 1/2 years or so, and even I'm not the best. I'm a hell of alot better than many people, but I'm not the top dog at anything besides pure Melee (I rule there). I quite freely admit that I've met some people that I can just plain not beat 1v1.
I would be astounded if their community was right. The general consensus is that the average player is 11-12. I believe that GunZ is the perfect game (as of now) for the angry young man. Or the hyperactive teen. But never the kid; this is a game for competitive people, or ones who enjoy power and speed.
...
and yet it is unbalanced?
Not when everyone is using the exact same set-up....
What did I learn?
*sigh*
Under good conscious, I can't advise any of you to play this game.
Under good conscious, I can't advise any of you to stay away either.
Why?
Because this game accidentally showed me where FPS's can go. Imagine a touched-up version. Imagine if things were balanced, lag was handled well, and a slew of new modifications were added. Wouldn't it be glorious?
If nothing else, watch a couple more videos on YouTube, and just TRY the game. It's free, it'll take an hour of your time. Read up on a couple guides to K-style.
Always, always, always LEARN from your experiences.
EDIT: I forgot to link the actual site, here it is: http://gunz.ijji.com/
