So I'm trying to put together a Guybrush Threepwood costume for halloween. I'm thinking of going with Monkey Island 2 Guybrush, because he has darker hair and a beard, which looks more like I do. The pants are pretty basic, and for the shirt I think I could make an old white T-shirt work if I make the hole for the neck a little bigger and deeper.
The biggest problem is the coat. I'm not really sure if it's supposed to be a captain's coat, but I'm thinking of going with that if I can get my hands on one. I also need some really big boots, military surplus store maybe?

Any ideas for making this costume work, preferably without spending a ton of money?

The problem with military surplus is you're going to get military-style boots, which today look something like this:

It looks like Guybrush sports pirate-style boots, the most important feature being that giant cuff. You might actually be able to fudge that with a regular pair of brown boots without laces, and then slipping some folded-down brown material into the top. You might try starching something like felt or fabric, or affixing the brown material to something stiffer to maintain the shape. Fabric or craft stores may have swatches of cheap leather you can get. But that just comes down to what you can find and how much you are willing to DIY. Just make sure you get the boots first, so the brown on the material matches the brown cuff as much as possible.

For the coat, I recommend finding some costume, pawn, and secondhand stores in your area. If there aren't too many where you live, try online. It's not too late to order something, though expedited shipping would be preferable. Oh, and don't forget the giant belt. That looks like a pretty important feature, too. That shouldn't actually be too hard to find at the costume or secondhand stores.

Yeah, the giant buckled belt and the.. belt-thingey across his chest are defining features in the pixel image, so I'll make sure to get those in the costume. I guess a simple blue coat could work if it's long enough, but that still leaves the boots. I'll see if I can figure out how to fake that giant cuff.
Thanks for the advice.
