I've noticed, in the last few years, when someone's account for an online service gets stolen people claim they were "hacked." "My RuneScape character got hacked!" "My facebook was hacked!" "Someone hacked into my bank account!" The thing is, it rarely was hacked: either you gave away your information (you where "phished") or your password was obvious to someone who knows you (your account was "cracked"). I believe the reason people claim their accounts get hacked is because it absolves them of personal responsibility. "I wasn't stupid with my information, some hacker hacked on to the server and hacked my account! But, no worries, I'm going to get a ton of money from this Nigerian Princess."

What say you? Any stories about how your friends got "hacked"?

My friend apparently got hacked five times on Gaia, and when I asked how, he claimed that he had no idea.

Then I asked if he had ever given out his password or account information.

He said 'yeah, but only to my closest friends. But they would never--"

I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

Poor, ppor guy. I use the same two to four passwords for every site I frequent, but not even my closest friends would be able to guess what either of them are, since one of them I've been using for well over a decade, and the other is something no one would expect.

It was a time, before time. In a world of war and craft, a mate and I were coming through the Undercity. I gave him a good set of armour the day before. I asked what he had done with it, since he didn't have it on.

He said he was "hacked." I called him a moron and held my blade to the sky and vowed to never buy friends good items, ever again.

I've never been "hacked", both in the stricter sense of the term and the more common, bastardized one. I agree that it's overused in places where it makes little to no sense, however.

1 billion, I'd hate to be the person to log in in the mornings
they probably have a "password" button on their computes. in which case, whats the point of the security?
