My runescape profile was hacked. My password was "1bO8tUQP5j5mggh"
I told no one and never wrote it down. But the idiot helped me! It stole my level 20 guy in mithril armour with a 2 handed mithril sword (at least I think it was mithril) and 500 gold.
I logged back on and had a level 42 character with 756,000 gold and some better armour and weapons.
I then got a message from someone sayin "u stol mi acount!"
I replied with "It was my account originally, but you can have it if you want it"

That was a few years ago.

I've not been hacked becuase my password has 206 digits

it started as 9517538524565791382465 and grew to include letters, greek letters and a lot of zeroes.

i change it every other day here on the Escapist
What do you do with the sites that limit you at 18 digits?
you dont wanna know. i change those every hour. rotating elliptical code in Delta-7 curve. (code speak for what the CIA does)
Are you Hideo Kojima

Hes the only one who could possibly understand the most complex and weirdest things out there
darn! he found out! QUICK ELIMINATE HIM!!!!

*cough* back to reality. i just googled how to encode a stream of numbers. and the CIA password has 1 billion digits.
1 billion, I'd hate to be the person to log in in the mornings
they probably have a "password" button on their computes. in which case, whats the point of the security?
I dunno, but maybe they got a robot that starts doing it at like 3 in the morning
the poor, innocent robot. he will be the first to revolt.

They probably have a memory card of some kind to store the numbers and then that card is used as a key... At least that's kinda what I would have done...

My friend apparently got hacked five times on Gaia, and when I asked how, he claimed that he had no idea.

Then I asked if he had ever given out his password or account information.

He said 'yeah, but only to my closest friends. But they would never--"

I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
Lol wow, he really didn't figure that out sooner?!

Well, ever since my brother found out my first "stupid password" I turned it into a large stream of letters of stuff I thought was important seix years ago. Now I use alternating version depnding on website. Using a cipher I can remember and most likely only makes sense to me.

The sad thing is how amazingly easy it is for people to get people to just give them their accounts. I know this kid who used to steal people's accounts on Runescape, he would just tell people that if they gave him their password he'd install an auto-logger for them to help them level up, then he'd dump all the good stuff out of the account into his own, and if he felt like being a dick he'd even change the password so they couldn't use the account again. Apparently he did quite well in the scamming biz too.

Someone hacked into one of the email servers at my college and about 1500 accounts were shut down for about a week. I, luckily, was not one of them.

You hear of the Twitter "pornstar name" scheme? You get someone to make a "pornstar name" from their first dog and kindergarten teacher - two commonly used security questions - and they'd just post it for the public to see. These schemes are less computer hacks and more person hacks - it exploits vulnerabilities in people.

I guess he just had a lot of trust in his so-called 'friends.' Not that hacking his Gaia was a big deal, but...then again...I guess posting up embarrassing pictures could get someone infuriated.

I've noticed, in the last few years, when someone's account for an online service gets stolen people claim they were "hacked." "My RuneScape character got hacked!" "My facebook was hacked!" "Someone hacked into my bank account!" The thing is, it rarely was hacked: either you gave away your information (you where "phished") or your password was obvious to someone who knows you (your account was "cracked"). I believe the reason people claim their accounts get hacked is because it absolves them of personal responsibility. "I wasn't stupid with my information, some hacker hacked on to the server and hacked my account! But, no worries, I'm going to get a ton of money from this Nigerian Princess."
It's easier to say that you were overpowered by someone with an unfair advantage rather than admit that your password is your name or something obvious. Otherwise you'd have to admit your stupidity.

ThrobbingEgo said:
What say you? Any stories about how your friends got "hacked"?
My friend's Facebook account was once imitated by somebody else from our school, but that's about it. Though there was a guy on a forum I used to frequent who was a respected poster and went batshit insane one day... we suspected someone took over his account. Though it probably wasn't hacked.

I have to say I don't believe you.

If you're not joking, I both admire you and think you need a new hobby.
