"A character controlled by a hacker who used exploits to dominate online game Guild Wars 2 has been put to death in the virtual world."

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-32654414

So they just delete the character/ characters from the game, but does it really solve the problems associated with people using hacks in the game in the first place? Honestly I do not think just deleting the characters or the account is enough to really combat this issue. I don't think it deters or prevents them from doing it again just having an account deleted I think they should take more measures to help resolve the issue. DO you think That is enough to actually combat the problem of hacks or bots? What would you suggest?

I Think in the short term they should ban hard drives ( Not IP but use an actual HD detection tool and ban the hard drive itself) since they would have to buy another HD to play again which would put a barrier, although minor barrier since Hard drives are not very expensive, but at least it would be a barrier, and make them pile up hard drives in order to hack. In the Long term, in nations where they are legally able to do so, they should sue the users of hack/ bots, not just the creators in order to set an example. Actually being sued for that crap might actually make people reconsider doing it in the first place.

What you're talking about is called HWID [http://www.techopedia.com/definition/3369/hardware-identification-hwid], and it is already used by a number of anticheat solutions (and spoofed/bypassed by a number of cheat packages).

The title sounded more dramatic than it really is. I was kinda expecting someone to have broken into the guys house and decapitated the poor guy... Iv'e been rewatching death note =_=.

I would have at least retaken control of the character and held an in game execution. Medievil style. Hung at the gallows for all to see and permanently added to the world as an example... Again iv'e been watching deathnote for like the 5th time .

OT: Personally i think they should should make a seperate server for cheaters. If you are caught hacking, you're entire account is transfered into a new server for people caught cheating and make it irreversible. That way they can hack all they want with other hackers. And may even enjoy it enough to stay there instead of trying to come back and hack in the regular servers.

Kind of like diablo 2 with the closed and open battle.net.

They could have just deleted the character, but man is this more entertaining.

MMOs should do this more often I say, make a special of the execution of hacking, cheating, farmboting and otherwise banned accounts for the players who are legitimate to watch be executed for our entertainment.

No I am not talking about the windows tool, I am talking about the tool in the HD format disc from Hard drive manufacturers that doesn't need an operating system. You can install one with the game install, but most people really hate root kits.

This honestly seems more like a petty revenge thing than an actual punishment or means to preventing further exploits. Hell, the article even says the devs don't know how or what he did to exploit the game; merely that he pissed people off by being better than them.

I'm not sure what they hoped to accomplish with this. It just seems like a really childish and ineffective way of dealing with a "cheater"

No, it wasn't that " he was better than them", I do not want to advertise the hack website that is responsible for these hacks, so I will not list it here, but yes anyone can download the pvp hacks easily for GW2 if they know where to look for them, They are fairly well known and somewhat widely used is the issue. They were just making an example out of him, but taking one guy down for the hacks doesn't stop the hundreds/ thousands that are currently using them in gw2.

Okay, that link didn't explain the way I'd hoped (that's what I get for not really looking it over), but the term HWID does cover what you're talking about- it checks the unique hardware ID of a number of components, including the CPU. But like I said, that can be spoofed.

Other companies also use the term " HDD Detection utility" ( for example: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NXCXK ) which is what it was called on the maxtor tool floppy as well :p

The ability to spoof it though ALSO depends on which tool/ tools are used to detect it. While one manufacturers tool may not work another will.

You need to lighten up. If you're going to ban somebody whose been disrupting the community, might as well make a show out of it so the collective efforts by individuals to expose him would be more worth it.

Also, "merely that he pissed people off by being better than them"? The fuck? You think using hacks makes you "better" than other players? I hope that was just a poor choice of words.

I'm a bit disappointed, I was expecting some sort of in-game mock trial, followed by a walk through the gallows.

This was done in Guildwars 1 also, with the in game "God of death" Grenth coming to reap the soul of exploiters and people who abused the games rules. When the offender would log in, Grenth would come and unleash his scythe, permabaning the person.

What? Did they get advice from Death Gun or something?

Other than that, I got nothing... Hackers gotta get whacked somehow, even in a blaze of showmanship from the gaming perspective...

Your solution is to sue them? Really?

I've got no words for how monumentally stupid that sounds.
They actually do sue the bot and hack makers... Suing the people who use them as well would be much more effective at reducing the numbers than just deleting accounts.

How monumentally stupid is it when it works better than other methods? So you think the game developers are monumentally stupid for suing the creators of bots and hacks as well?

The great thing is when they sue the bot/ hack makers, they legally force them to turn over all their data on the people who use them, making it much easier to sue them as well if they so choose.

At first I misread the title missing out the "ingame"

OT- I suppose I am fortunate enough to never come across this character (long time GW2 player) as I had never heard of Darkside until now.

Speaking of the video, I suppose it was best that it was plain, quick and simple.

It wasn't Grenth, it was Dhuum (the first god of death before Grenth) that they used to banned other player in GW. They should probably bring that method back into GW2.

I have always wanted to see an in game trial/ jury of peers system made up of players to handle bans, and have punishments like your character being tied to a tree for a specified time period not being able to talk to anyone in game or move while players throw flaming exploding pigs at them... though I have a feeling even that would become terribly corrupt given the number of bots/ hackers in any game they could rig the jury system XD.

Maybe if it was strictly regulated by admins? It'd become basically a second job for them.

Saw this article yesterday in work. Nearly did a spit take as I only skimmed the headline and thought they'd actually put a game hacker to death. I know MMOs try to stamp down on gold farming and the like but that maybe going a little overboard :p

Kind of the disappointed they didn't have a full trial in game. If your going to make a big deal out of executing a in game character you need to go the full hog. Judges, jury, that guy who does the sketches, witnesses, surprise witnesses and a defense lawyer who uncannily resembles Lionel Hutz.

That's pretty sweet, but I was kinda expecting like a GW2 decapitation or something, would have been pretty fucking sweet.

Heheh. In the original Guild Wars, if a player received a ban while they were logged on, Dhuum (the deposed God of Death, and an antagonist in the original series) would appear and reap their character with his scythe to deliver the ban.

Observe it happening mid-match;
