"Hackers" And Xbox Live

So basically I've been back on CoD4 recently and Jumped into a free for all game where I immediately got a Kill and received a generous -12323441324 (or something fucking stupid like that) and was about to turn off my console to avoid the De-rank When boom the hosts quits therefore I'm now 5th Prestige level 1 requiring an impossible amount of XP to level up, needless to say I'm Pissed Iv'e never once hacked a game at all and had no intention of Thanks a bunch you Eternal Virgin, basement dwelling Ass Holes. >.<

So anyway fellow escapist's what "experiences" have you had with Hackers and how do you think Microsoft(or Sony and Steam for that matter) should go about dealing with these waste's of cartilage?

Never once seen a hacker on XBL. Ever. Am I lucky? Guess so, cos I've banned more than my fair share of the ethic-less bastards from my clan's Urban Terror server.

I do see a lot of people exploiting glitches and little known "un-intended" paths in games though, two good examples are the recently removed glitch in the Sword Base level in Halo: Reach that allowed you to stay out of reach of the zombies in the living dead playlist and another ledge on top of a building in the Glacier firefight level of the same game, whereby you can sit with a long range precision weapon and snipe the AI with absolutely no retribution. (as long as you have a jetpack to get up there)

I have also been accused of hacking a few times on PC, though not often, and one memorable time in Reach when I absolutely stormed a firefight game and gleaned nearly 60k points. That day was so much win.

Never seen an actual hacker on LIVE so Microsoft must be doing their job properly.

Ive always seen more people claiming they have been hacked, or someone is cheating than Ive seen actual hackers or cheaters via XBL.

Almost every time ive seen that accusation it was because someone suffered a death they didnt feel was justified.

Not saying it doesnt happen, but it seems like an incredibly low occurrence ratio

A lot of people hack TF2 on the consoles to give anti-gravity when you jump. Also you rocket to the end of the map if you touch a wall. Needless to say, it was the best experience of Xbox Live I've had. Everyone enjoys it.

I've seen quite a few hackers on xbox live, but they were almost exclusively on MW2.

Seen lobbies where they host could run at 200 miles an hour. Others where the host had an aimbot that allowed him to headshot people through walls. Seen a couple where the host only needed to get one kill to get an AC-130. Saw a guy who could shoot an unlimited amount of RPGs without ever needing to reload.

Of course, this doesn't even count all that people who blatantly do network manipulation and lag-switch.

I've heard of these things, but not actually seen them (to my knowledge), or know what they are. Bungie make a big thing about "network manipulation" in Halo 3, but I'm stuffed if I know what either of those things are. Could you possibly enlighten me? Unless the mods would frown on it, in which case, forget I asked.

I don't...I don't get what you're saying happened. How can NEGATIVE experience be applied to your gamertag's level?

I've seen hacking, but mostly only in the ol' Halo 2 days when you would basically be unable to spawn if on the opposing team, lots of stuff like that, but nothing at all like what you're saying.

Have you tried contacting Activision on their forum or something? I doubt they'd say "nah, you clearly got negative 1 million experience somehow." They'll very likely reset it back to normal.

It's pretty simple. When a game is played peer to peer (like everything on xbox live) the game is run through a host console. One person is the host and everyone else connects to them. Each player's input is sent to their console, then that console sends the inputs to the host console, which then reads them, and then from the host's console sends all of the inputs back to the other player from the perspective of the host (this is a super basic explanation). This means that everything is actually running off of the host's console, which is why in game sometimes you'll get shot when you were behind a wall, because your input to the fact that you had run behind the wall had not yet gotten to the host's xbox before he shot you, meaning that on his screen you were still visible, and since he is the host, his xbox is always right.

Now the way a lag switch works is it slows or interrupt's the host's connection to the internet periodically (this can be done in a number of ways, the most common is by attaching a physical device to the Ethernet cable). This way the host's inputs are read by the game (since the match is running off of his xbox), but everyone else's inputs aren't. This makes it so that the host can kill people who are not moving on his screen, or who are moving very slowly. To everyone else the host will seem to be teleporting, and it will be impossible to get hit registration on him while in that state.

This can normally be mitigated by the game's ability to change hosts if the host's connection becomes too bad, but good lag switchers are able to fool the game into thinking that they are just having random lag spikes.

Except of course for all the time you lost earning those points in the first place. If you lost all your save data at the final stage you'd be rightfully pissed off because the time and effort you've spent has all been wasted.

Is it the end of the world? Of course not. But if you invest time and effort into something and have what you worked for taken away the proper emotional response is distress.

I got into a MW2 that gave me a ridiculous amount of points. Luckily I was already legit 9th level 70 (and I'm staying there) but it makes me pissed because I was the top at my friends list of around 100 in score, k/d and w/l and now it just looks like I'm a hacker.

The only cheating I've experienced is on MW2 on PS3. Aimbots. There was even a URL at the top of the screen flashing red and white. I promptly quit, and tried to submit a complaint to Activision, but apparently the PSN ID didn't exist, even though I could tell who was using it. PSN had no record of the ID either, so I just gave up (cause I couldn't remember the exact ID) and never picked up MW2 again.

If people want to cheat like that, I simply won't play. Plain and simple. It ruins the game for me, but it saves me hours of frustration dealing with the pricks and it's one less person they can cheat against.

The ID you saw probably doesn't exist. What a lot of hackers do to prevent from being caught is they use a legitimate PSN ID, but then they hack the game and make it so that it displays a fake ID when in game (this is also how many hackers are able to make their ID something vulgar).
