Hacker's don't do "cool stuff" anymore because laws against hacking are much more serious and most likely those who enforce the laws have better equipment to track people down.

The frivolous hackers are still around, like here [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samy_(XSS)] (<--wiki link), but when you look at what he got charged with, do you think its worth it for them?

Hacking has gone down over time because a lot of developers took their thumbs out of their butts and made their stuff more secure. There's still thousands upon thousands of vulnerabilities out there, but not as many as there used to be.

Also, there's money to be made in the field. So any hobbyist is probably picked up by a security firm, the FBI, or roped into Criminal Hacking.

There's still a lot of script kiddies out there who think they're 1337 b'cuz dey has teh latest nd gr8est skript out dere. But other than that, they don't know a lot about what is actually going on, and by using those scripts, they are doing themselves more harm than good.

There still are "cool" hackers. They're stealing your credit card details, your XBL accounts and your personal information. I have the feeling those guys wanted to do something to get noticed and wouldn't result in a long stint in gaol.

Personally, I think that is hilarious.

And hackers was a TERRIBLE movie. So was Swordfish.
