I remember when they tried to hack the Gibson. 10 cookies for the reference.
Hackers movie :D awesome :D Awesome but completely unrelated to hacking or cracking aside from the simple plot. Maybe a bit of principle here or there but the actual technique is rubbish.

Good stuff still happens, but the hacking community is currently besieged by a plague of balcan script kiddies. Have a look at the psp hacking scene if you want to see some good old multinational company raging.

They tried to move up to hack time, but then the Campaign for Real Time came down on them like a ton of bricks *Theres a cookies here for a reference*
Hitch-hikers. Unless the Campaign is in something else as well.

There's a great looking hack in one of the server rooms in Sydney city (not permitted to say where sorry, confidentiality laws) - it's not quite as epic as the side of an office building, but when you dial a phone number the respective server racks light up from top to bottom (sequence of ultra-bright blue LED's) - then while you speak there are strips of red LED's across the tops of each rack that pulse much the same as KIT.

If anyone works in there, please grab a movie, it's been about two years since I was in there.

Edit: To clarify, there are 10 racks, each corresponding to a telephone digit hooked in to the server room phone, the red LED's are attached to microphones.

There was just a news article on this site about this. Some proffesional hacker got into one of microsoft's systems and just left a message praising their efforts in trying to stop him.

Hackers still do cool stuff occasionally. Team of hackers hacked their way into the servers from the new particle accelerator in Switzerland. Just left a message that they might want to increase their security.

I am doing cool stuff...

Note: there is a big difference between "the creative use of computing" = Hacking
and "the violation and subversion of networked systems" - Cracking, unfortunately
the media has been using the term Hacker to mean both and largely the latter...

That Angelina Jolie film didn't help much, either.

Just read a copy of 2600 magazine and you may be better informed.

Cool hacking does still exist its just either well planned and subtle or done by absent minded fellow, like the guy who hacked the Pentagon network from his apartment in the UK just because he had always wondered, in a rather innocent way, if it were possible.

remember when hackers were cool and make "i love you" virus's across the globe and fucking with the pentagon. whatever happened to them. and why don't hackers to cool stuff anymore.
I suspect the common man in the street is now a little more familiar with the bad side of computer crime, having dealt with spyware, identity theft, phishing, e-mail worms, and so forth. Twenty years ago, you didn't feel the direct effects unless you were one of the (very small) number of computer users.

Regarding the I Love You worm, I was taking a class on an Air Force base on the day that beauty hit. Our instructor- a sharp guy, but not quite computer savvy- checked his e-mail before class started, and it went like this:
Him: "Huh, an e-mail that says 'I love you.' Oh, there's an attachment... I love you dot VBS? Wonder what that is."
RMcL: "VBS? It's probably a virus. Don't click on it."
Him: *clickity-click*
RMcL (slow motion): "Nooooooooooooooooooo!"
Him: "Wait, what's wrong with my computer?"
