What's the deal with the degree of love directed towards half life 2? We can all agree that it was a good game, but I didn't find it exceptional. The engine was and still is fantastic, but I see it as the Crysis of it's time. It was extremely well crafted and looked beautiful but there was nothing else on show. The guns were pretty much the norm for a first person shooter. You have your fast firing tiny gun, your really strong big gun with a 1 hit kill secondary fire, rocket, sniping weapon, Tiny pistol, big pistol, and shotgun. The gravity gun, while completely awesome, wasn't that influential in the game and was one of the weakest weapons in a straight up fight with the combine. The plot is rather vague, and you can't see your feet. Tell me your reasons for liking the game, or a reason for me to be kinder to it.

Tell me why I should waste my time removing the veil from your eyes, and we'll have a deal.

Seriously, you don't like it. Big fuckin' whoop. You're not special. If you didn't like the game, go play something you do like and stop clogging the forums.

I came here for some good ol' HL2 smexin', and I get nothing. Poo.

I liked the game, I just want to know why some of us say it's the best shooter ever.

Here's the easy way to respond to your post:

"Because for it's time Half-Life 2 was incredible and the fact that it can still be considered a decent game when measured against today's gaming standards is a testament to it's quality."

The long way to explain all of that with detailed examples, but I'm to lazy to do that right now. Sorry.

Because that is their opinion of the game.
They play it and find it more fun and better to play then Halo, CoD and any other shooters out there for PC or console. I cannot comment on the game myself as I have never played it.
Oh, and remove the reason you can't see your feet as a reason you don't enjoy it as much as others. That just smacks of grasping at straws, personally.

The foot comment was a joke. There are an exceedingly small number of fist person games where you can see your feet, and I just think it's funny.

Part of the reason I made this discussion was because I knew everyone would dislike me for it. By the way, unreal tournament 2004 was awesome.

Life did a great job at making characters that you actually cared for. While the combat wasn't really that great, it did make up for it by including puzzle sequences that were far better than those found in most other modern FPSs (even if a lot of them did incudes you crawling through a vent).

That's a poor argument, considering that it was only made back in 2004. Most of the games that I liked back then would still hold up pretty well, even with dated graphics. A lot of them would be considered much better than decent against today's standards (Metroid Prime is still the best of the trilogy).

The plot makes more sense if you've ever played Half-Life, and since when does it make a game good or bad if you can't see your feet in first person. Barely any games had it so you can see your feet at the time.

I agree. I actually couldn't beat HL2, not because I was stuck, but as I got further in the game, I cared less and less. It went into a pile of about 5 games that I've never completed even once.

Cuz the grav' gun was tonnes of fun!

:)

I didn't think it was that great, either but, hey, we all have our opinions. Just roll with it. Take it slow and enjoy the game. Try to forget the hype, that's what I did.

Ahem...

1. Story
Utterly immersive world, with an emotionally engaging story told throught he environment rather than cutscenes.

If you found the story vague, you either weren't paying enough attention to your surroundings, or you're just a bit slow.

2. Physics

It was a pioneer in the physics department, something it is easy to take for granted in today's world of environmental destruction and big debris-filled bada booms.

3. Journey

The game took the player on a fantastic, long, satisfying journey that kept changing and making things interesting with new mechanics.

4. Context

You really feel a part of the world in HL2. It was the first game I played where I cared about the characters, even my AI squadmates. I wanted to save the world for them, not just shoot stuff.

5. Alyx

Still the best friendly AI in any game, ever. Sheva can go suck a zombie tongue.

6. The interactive nature of everything

You were never taken out of first person view. Total immersion.

The trip up the citadel in the pod remains a stunning piece of interactive art.

That enough for you?

While all of that is true and concise the replies to this thread have been rather pointless for you see, sting is glowing.

Thats why I felt the thread needed some actual input that made sense.

'Sting is glowing?'

Not to be rude, but in the name of Glados are you on about?
