I have a better question.

Where the heck is his helmet?
Freeman's Mind?

Well, whenever I don't know the reasoning behind something, wizards did it. Or, in this case, G-Man.

But I agree that it would have been weird for Gordon to appear in City 17 wearing an HEV suit. It would have tipped Breen off pretty swiftly that the One Free Man (as he would later be known as) had returned. And he was kickin' names and takin' ass!

I agree with the folks positing that the G-Man put the suit somewhere where Dr. Kleiner could and would recover it (perhaps even influencing Kleiner to do it). This brings up an entirely seperate and seldom-discussed point, however:

Clearly, the G-Man is intended to be the agent of ex machina within the narrative: after all, the whole 'psychedelic tram through netherspace' final speech in HL indicates that the G-Man probably isn't really attached to 'the Government'; at least not what we think of when we say 'the Government', anyway. So who is the G-Man and, perhaps more importantly, who does he work for?

Along those lines, I didn't have a problem for why Gordon was doing the things he was doing in HL2. You're an employee of the G-Man. You have to figure you were awakened to do something. What is there to be done? Fight with the Resistance, or fight against them are about your only two options. (I doubt very seriously you were hauled out of 'sleep' to spend your time making bootleg liquor and smoking home-grown, as much as you may need a vacation.) Since, a) your friends are a part of the Resistance, and b) you were killing aliens before for the G-Man...

Throw on top of that the fact that the G-Man inserted you right where you would encounter Barney and be dragged into the middle of the Resistance, I thought it made perfect sense.
It is my thought that the "G-man" works for some sort of inter-dimensional, and/or inter planetary level of bureaucracy, or governance so to speak. Though I should point out that a lot of the weapons in the first half life far outstripped the power of many of the weapons in HL2, I suspect this is because the combine has a monopoly on most technological advances of humanity, but anyone else have any ideas?

Its a different Suit. For the people saying that Gman gave the suit to Kleiner, Gman didn't create the HEV suit, it was created by the Scientist of Black Mesa... which there happens to be alot of.

As for the people asking why Gordon Freeman is fighting the fight, its in the game, G-man says that he is in-valuable because Gordon has the ability of "free choice", for the sequel he takes that choice away from him.

His choice is to fight back.

Well he never said it was the same suit that Gordon had in HL1.
I figured it was the same HEV model as the one Gordon had, but Kleiner made some upgrades.
Here's he real question; how did Barney get your crowbar from Black Mesa?
With the Crowbar I thought he must have gotten the one the HECU marines took away from Gordon before throwing him into the trash compactor. As to the HEV suit, I'm going with the theory that GMan placed it somewhere for Kleiner, Eli or Barney to find.

I bet it was just a gag put in by Valve.

Holy Crap.

The G-Man and Kliener are SECRET LOVERS!!!111!!!!

No, but seriously, that's pretty neat that you noticed that.

But on a more related note, my theory is that the G-Man is actually the leader of the combine, or he's been the real enemy all along. I think this because of the fact that Xen seems to have no real significance in Half life 2 and the episodes. It's all this "combine overworld" talk. My theory is that the G-Man wanted Xen so he could get the crystals, which he could then use to open a dimensional rift for the combine to get to Earth. I don't believe that the G-Man particularly cares about the vortigaunts, because the Vortigaunts did half the job of rescuing Alyx, and they seem to help you do whatever you need to do, which you are doing for the G-Man.

Spoilers follow! I warned you.

Also an interesting reoccuring theme is that after a character reveals they know about the G-Man to Gordon, they die. Seriously, Doctor Breen gets killed only after he tells you that line that says "Your services were open to the highest bidder", which is clearly referencing he knew of the whole bit with the G-Man, and Eli Vance dies after he tells you he knows about the G-Man as well. I don't think these are coincidences either. The G-Man clearly doesn't want anyone to know he's there, instigating the situation. Maybe it's because both Doctor Breen and Eli have already fulfilled their purpose for the G-Man, and will be of no more use to him. Doctor Breen Gave the Combine control of earth, and Eli Vance started the resistance while Gordon was in stasis. And it seems clear to me that Alyx will die to, or maybe she will get put into stasis as well. I don't know. But regardless, it seems clear to me that the G-Man doesn't want anyone to know about him.

However, G-Man cannot be the leader of the Combine because he is obviously satisfied that Gordon is blowing them up. I still do think that it will turn out that the G-Man will be the real enemy though. Maybe G-Man just wanted them to establish a stable connection to the Combine overworld or something, so that he could go there and capture it. I don't know about that though, because he hasn't done anything about you going and shutting down the super portal at the end of Ep 2.

Well, I'm out of ideas now.

The ohter night i was struck by a small and unimportant plot hole in half life 2, that i could not come up with a feasable explanation for, and here it is.
How does doctor Kleiner obtain your old hazard suit?
When the G-man takes you into stasis I assume your HEV suit comes too, so why Kleiner have it? I did initally explain this away by thinking that its a different suit, but how common would they be after the combine invasion, and Kleiner says "I see your suit still fits you like a glove, at least the glove parts do", suggesting that it is the same suit as before.

Your veiw?
Aha, i thought this too until he started reading the manual... He mentions its the NEW HEV suit. I guess when he says fits you like a glove he means becuase its the same size. But apparently its the new model HEV suit.

I thought Kleiner himself just updated the suit, so technically it could be the old one?
I'm not sure, Half-Life's story is getting waaay to convoluted.
