I just downloaded SMOD and im able to play it and everything but for some reason all thats different is the hud and the sounds for explosions and guns along with other minor things. I don't know how to turn on all the other features like extreme gore and all of the new weapons.Help would be appreciated very much

The mod is specifically designed to make the game far more challenging as well as implementing more weapons, graphical improvements, more gore and minor level alterations. Unless you have some knowledge as to component removal inside Source operations folders, there's not much you can do about it. Aspects such as gore and the new weapons are hard-wired into the mod (and probably some of the more complicated things that the modders made).
Sounds could be removed, though. They will be located in
Program Files>Steam>Steamapps>SourceMods>(Name of Mod)>(Abbreviation of mod)>Sounds

Where'd you download the mod? If you downloaded it straight from the SMOD archive [http://www11.tok2.com/home/smod/], you should know that version won't function normally out of the box. SMOD40a and older were built with pre-Episode 2 code and with HL2 now using the newer engine, this causes problems. You can use Onemanshow's tweaked archive here [http://www.bsnooch.com/forums/index.php?topic=282.0] if you plan to play the HL2 campaign.
For how to tweak SMOD's features (gore, night vision, so on), I'd rather just point you to the SMOD Wiki [http://smod.wikidot.com/], especially the console command [http://smod.wikidot.com/script:console-command-list] page and the Customization [http://smod.wikidot.com/nav:indextable:customization] index. Is there anything specific you wanted to change?
