so i'm playing half life 2 (ep2) and i'm doing the wonderful(/sarcasm) big battle where the striders attack the silo, yadda yadda yadda. My question is do you have to kill the hunters that escort them? The striders aren't really giving me trouble and i'm hitting them mathsons (or however its spelled) but unless the hunters are dead they just bounce off.

Yes, you do need to kill them, since they will shoot at the (totally useless) Magnassun Devices that you need to use to bring the striders down, so even if you stick one to a Strider without a Hunter shooting it so it explodes in your face, they will shoot at it while it's stuck to the Strider.

I posted about this a couple of days ago - I'll dig up the thread link.

Edit:

Here's the thread I started on it a few days ago.

I remember that being the only really difficult part of the entire series.

Anyway, I don't remember having to kill the Hunters. I did do it because they were annoying, but I thought you could take the Striders down without killing the Hunters?
It's much more difficult if you leave the Hunters alive - not only are they going to harass you constantly, especially if you're in the open, but they shoot the Magnassun Devices.

You can take a Strider down with rockets while the Hunters are alive, which I did until I ran out of rockets, but I've not managed to make a Magnassun "stick" on a Strider and explode it while a Hunter has been alive.

If I recall correctly, the hunters will shoot off the magnusson devices with their flechettes if you don't kill them. So yes, you have to kill them.

I've never had any trouble with the Magasson devices. With a good enough aim you should be able to tack it on there and shoot it off with ease. BANG! Dead hunter.

The bombs don't bounce off because of the hunters, they get shot down by the hunters, if you are quick on the draw you can go directly for striders but you may be making it a lot more difficult then it need be.

I'd say 4 times out of 5, the Hunters' flechettes will destroy the Magnessiun devices midair. Getting your Magnessiun destroyed (or you miss with it) leaves you mostly defenseless against the Strider.

Run the fuckers over with your car, hit them with your RPG, hit them with the Pulse Rifle grenade (but that method doesn't work well in the open) or hit them with your crossbow. Car works the absolute best, but make sure you don't miss.

If you're fast enough, you can blow up the Striders without killing the Hunters but it's quite difficult. It's much easier to first kill the Hunters.
You could try to ram the Hunters with the car, if you can handle the car well enough.
Also, I found out that logs, which lie around there everywhere, can kill a Hunter rather quickly if you throw them with the Gravity Gun.
Other than that, just shoot them with everything you've got.

I had no problem killing the Striders even when the Hunters were still alive... I can only remember, maybe once when a Hunter shot a Magnison off of a Strider
