But they will never let this happen because it is much to profitable and in all honesty its not to hard to make a Halo game just copy everything from the last game and change a few levels and put them in different order. O and maybe add a new gun that no one will ever use then slap the name HALO on it and throw it to the marketers. Didn't Bungie say a few months ago that they were done with the Halo franchise after Recon? I remember reading that somewhere.
Either way, Halo 4 would be an abysmally bad idea in my honest opinion. It's getting to look like the Saw franchise, which is at it's eleventy-billionth iteration, and at this point it's just dry crap, not the innovating awesome that the original was.

Honestly, the Halo franchise has just started. People not liking it is never going to stop developers from feeding their kids and families. However, you gotta admit, the sheer staggering amount of work that is done on the multiplayer on Halo 3 and just how involved Bungie are with their fanbase makes you think that the games can only go upward. And a good thing too, maybe now the prior haters of the game will start liking it too and we'll all be a huge loving family and the wars and famine would end.
Sadly not. People are shit.

Halo is always going to be just a trilogy in my eyes. Yes there are spin offs but I don't really consider them part of the grand Halo title, just what they are... spin offs. I love the Halo Trilogy and I want it kept that way. I agre with Quack though, the fans wanted the spin offs let them have them if they want.
