This thread is just simply to discuss Halo: Custom Edition, in all it's glory. For those who don't know, Halo CE, as it's also known, is a release from Bungie of the original Halo game, shortly after the main game's release. It's very old, almost ten years now, but still has a thriving modding community and is about as popular now as Halo 2 was for multiplayer in it's prime. Bungie basically decided to release the map-editing software and stuff for modders to make their own levels and play multiplayer matches on modded maps, completely free provided you have a copy of the original game too for PC. Free to download over the internet, though you do need to download several patches too for it to run properly.

Anyway, this thread is just for general discussion of Halo CE, and so on. What are your favourite maps? Any anecdotes from battles? Maybe you've modded yourself? Share your tales here :D.

Doesn't CE stand for 'Combat Evolved'?

Halo was awesome for its time. Ironic that it never saw a release for Mac.

Okay, just to get the thread going a bit, I recall playing through the multiplayer map Coldsnap a while ago. An extremely popular map, it's roughly 6km by 6km in-game, with cliffs round three sides and mountains above them, and a sheer drop on the fourth side. There's a crevasse running all the way through and a single bridge to hold, and flags are outside the bases, which cannot be re-entered when you leave.

The key thing about the map is that it has modded Longsword fighters (with missiles and nukes) for slow aerial combat, and for fast attack aerial combat there are also Jets (with chainguns and limited missiles). I usually try to take the flag by grabbing a Jet from my base, flying out into the crevasse and following it round. I then stay low so the enemy don't spot me, climb right by the mountains, then hide in the mountains as I get closer to the flag. Then take the same route out. One time, someone cottoned onto that.

Result? A massive dogfight where we were both in Jets, flying through the mountains using the peaks as cover and trying to circle around each other and get a line of sight to fire. Best moment I've ever been in on that map, halfway through we ended up in the crevasse and kept circling around again. I lost eventually, damn laptop controls, but it was good while it lasted :D.

Another time in a Jet was when a lone sniper on the other team managed to hold us all off in a single massed aerial attack on the enemy flag. Every time we got close he'd shoot us out of the sky with well placed headshots. Not sure if he was using bots or was just very good at sniping, but that's beside the point. In the end I took a Jet around the mountains, came up behind and found out his position from directly above. Didn't take long to take him out after that :).
