Last week on Odin's Day, largely unnoticed by most news outlets, Tor Books announced Halo: Evolutions.

Halo: Evolutions is a 416 page collection of short stories 'set across the span of the Halo Universe.' Authors of the stories include veteran Halo novelists Eric Nylund (The Fall of Reach, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx) and Tobias Buckell (The Cole Protocol) as well as acclaimed sci-fi video game novelist Karen Traviss. 'A number of other best-selling and award winning writers' will also contribute as will 'a number of the games' writers and creators.'

' "The chance to explore corners of the Halo universe, whether obscure or popular, is something we are always excited to do, but the chance to shine light on these dark corners with the talents of these wonderful luminaries, is a pleasure indeed," says Frank O'Connor, Franchise Development Director, 343 Industries. "The combination of fresh eyes and old hands guarantees a brilliant continuation of a Halo tradition." '

The Halo Graphic Novel (pictured) was released three years ago and we will soon see its anthology format adapted to novels and anime. Halo: Evolutions is set to be released November 24, 2009. Complain about franchise milking below!

Oh, for Christ's sake. Can't they let it go already?

Alright, alright, calm thoughts...Well, at least I know I'm not going to get it.

Okay, the Halo games were fun and all, but seriously? Isn't there enough Halo merchandise out there?

Does anyone even read those? I mean I read a lot but this just doesn't look amusing compared to actually playing halo and killing aliens now I get to read about it.

I read one of the books because I was curious about some of the backstory. If the rest are anything like it then they are interesting but poorly written.

Compared to most Japanese games/shows/films Halo is somewhat lacking.

Why would they? As long as people show interest they are going to make more. I don't see why anybody not interested should care.

It's not as if they are compulsory.

Cool, I might pick it up but I'm suspicious of the quality of stories based off of games.

And surely they can make whatever they want as long as someone enjoys it. Hell, they can do it regardless.

You guys followed my suggestion!

Now for my opinion: as a Halo fan I'm excited. For the past couple weeks I've been re-reading the six Halo novels just to re-familiarize myself with the Halo Universe and after reading each one I seemingly have a physical compulsion to pause and reflect on how awesome they are. Sure they aren't Dune or Ender's Game but they're great semi-hard military sci-fi.

Comparing Halo with Dune and Ender's Game should be some sort of crime agaisnt Science Fiction, and the punishment should be stoned by Dune hardcovers to death. They don't even belong in the same league.

Didn't I just say that they weren't?

Yep, I did.

I do because I like the backstory. If you don't then fine, just don't buy it. But can people stop complaining about something they've either never played or, if they have played it, that is developing it's franchise well. How many people complain about Star Wars or Warhammer and the countless spin off works they've produced? On these forums I've never seen a single post complaining about those spin offs. Only Halo. No more flaming please guys, how does that sound?

I'm personally looking forward to any more Halo merchandise, if it gives me further details of the backstory and the expanding universe (i.e. I'm not the sort to buy an Arbiter plush toy, but I will read all the novels and so on). Hence I like this idea, especially since some of the names involved have already shown themselves to work well with the Halo universe (for example, Eric Nylund and Travis Buckell).

No but you compared them. And my comment about "Not in the same league" was that Dune and Ender's Game are considered literature and Halo novels are nothing. No offense to Halo story but that's it. Dune is usually regarded as the greatest Science Fiction work ever and revolutionized storytelling in books, while Halo has troubles getting acceptted as something good.

I would say stop milking the halo franchise but you might say its irrelevant.

But I wasn't comparing. I was saying that they shouldn't be compared.

If I was to say: "Halo: The Fall of Reach is no Dune" I imply that the two should not be compared.

Also, literature is any written work. Everything from The Book of 1001 Nights to the Treaty of Versailles to a poem about the virtues of a brand of printer to a barely legible post on 4chan.

Say good literature then.
