Halo: playing as any race

thats kinda the point, each as a differant advantage and weakness, hunters are big but slow and grunts are small but theirs lots of them.

i group of grunts could take down a hunter if they got behind it or if one of them had a heavy weapon (fuel rod only i think)

hunters= gears of war coop with shields=mobile cover
elites= tps with melee combat and stealth
jackals= sniping
grunts= standard cover based tps with humor and sticky grenades and fuel rod guns and gruntiness
drones= darkvoid style jetpacking

yeah playing as different covenant races would be awesome

My idea?
Halo: Battlefront.
Humans, Covenant, Flood.
All have their own infantry and vehicles.
Hell, if you really wanted a fourth team, perhaps the Forerunners.
Historical battles: Forerunners vs Flood. Modern battles: Humans vs Covenant.
So like Star Wars: Battlefront, but Halo.

o .0 I came.

But seriously, please? I've been thinking about OP's idea for a while actually. I really would like to see a Brutes vs. Elites gametype, or an ODST vs. Spartan, or Drones vs. Jackals. Anything like that.

Can you imagine playing a gametype called Big Team Hunters? Holy shit.

And what about finally bringing in the basic Spartan IIIs, the guys with no shields but constant active camo? Spartan 2s vs Spartan 3s would be a hell of a match up. Walking tanks vs. fucking ninjas, who could say something bad about that?

I'd also really like to see what sort of armor abilities you could give to a Carrier form, haha.

EDIT: I'm looking at you guys arguing about balance, and correct me if I sound like a 'tard, but wouldn't the easiest way to balance be to alter the point values of each race? Base line races like Spartan IIs, Spartan IIIs, Elites and Brutes be one kill/one point. But for a Marine, make it 1 kill = 1/2 a point. A grunt or Drone with their weak health and low weapon compatibility be worth only a fourth of a kill. Make Hunters worth two points per kill. You can tweak spawn times too so that the weaker races can spawn back almost instantly but a big mother fucker like a Flood Tank Form be restricted to 6 or 7 seconds. Again, leave the Elites and Spartans etc at 3 second standard.

I think its workable. TF2 balanced all its classes to perfection, despite the disparities in objective strengths and vulnerabilities. Nothing's impossible.

you sir just made me realise how awesome this idea could be.
you get a cookie

but a good question would be do the hunters get the beams or the fuel rod bolts? or possibly switching between the 2?

Now this is an idea that I like...if a group of modders or better yet 343 could get to work on this and balance/fine tune it I'd definitely check it out

also i think if you could play as marines that they should be very equpment heavy. traps and thing becuase their fairly easy to kill with a moderate amount of fire power (depending on weapons) so i think they should be for more tactical sort of fighting

I was just thinking that. Why not restrict the class to heavy weapons? Have their starting weapons be either one of the fuel rod variants, bolt or focusing beam, and allow them to pick up any kind of turret and use it with unlimited ammo? The bastards are basically light vehicles as it is, may as well give them access to vehicle caliber weapons.

And...how exactly would you control 5 different characters with an xbox 360 controller without turning the game into an RTS?
simple, dont treat them like 5 charactures, make them controlled like a single person but like i said less accurate to deal with the whole "5 guns aimed at one person" thing
or you controll one, and the other 4 follow you intelligently?

the only problem i see is, how on earthname do you JUMP with a pack of grunts?
can they jump?

i like the points idea :) could work well, could also be done on damage.
so then hunters give you more points because they take more damage and inversly so for grunts/drones it also mean that kill stealing is no longer a problem.

The issue with grunts is that their whole point is cannon fodder. It's not a big deal when one dies, because there's always one to replace them. See my comment above. I really think that dramatically reduced spawn times and point values can make playing as a Grunt a strategically valid option. They're easy targets, but worthless targets, and yet they can heft the biggest weapons and drive the tankiest vehicles just like a Spartan. That's a griefer's wet dream.

i dont think they could, not with any realy effect. perhaps climbing? totem poll style could take to long tho and get shot but its an idea

I think Microsoft might do that at one point now that Bungie is no longer developing. It would be pretty sweet if they pulled it off.

actually i think i'd restict them on vehicles a ghost or hanging off the side of a tank and only 1 fuel rod cannon to the groupe, can you imagine 5 fuel rod cannons? that would be over powered

I'm flooding this thread, but Maskerade's got my noodle knotted up with ideas.

Who else would love playing as an Engineer? Bring back the Halo 3 equipment as the Engineer's only method of attack? The ultimate support character. A dude who grants overshields to his teammates, sets up modest minefields, drops healthpacks and bubble shields... Damn, I'm salivating. So many options....

Nevermind the Flood and Forerunner options. I'd love to drive around in one of Halo 2's Enforcers. And a kamikaze attack from an entire team playing as carrier forms would, at the very least, be totally fucking awesome for that first push in a CTF game. Nevermind that, just have one carrier on defense. You rush into Red base on Hemorrhage and run full pelt into a big bulging sickly green mass of ew, scream as that player taps his armor ability button and explodes at you, killing you, and leaving an army of onionheads to wreak havoc on your unsuspecting teammates when they rush in after you.

Play as a Sentinel with a sniper rifle? Float to the top of the map and cackle like a mad god?

So many fucking options. I'm never gonna satisfied with regular Halo multiplayer again...

See I don't think controlling a group would be feasible. Just leave it to controlling the one grunt, armor ability being suicide rush, and play normally. You can do and can't do anything that a campaign grunt can or cant do. With point values and spawn times tweaked, it would viable.

i dont think the sentinal would be very balenced but then if its a focus rifle and there are other flying races so it MIGHT work

of god i just had and epic but totaly unfair and unbalenced idea:

drive a scarab, ok it wouldnt work at all coz it would be far to over powered but its a fun idea. on that note what about driving a pelican? drop in troops 1 person fly 1 person to gun the missiles (pilot gets nose mounted chain gun) could be good

Scarab or Elephant could make for a seriously sweet Invasion game.

Wow, when I first saw this thread, i thought a multi-race halo game would be terrible, after a few minutes of reading, im starting to wonder WHY bungie/microsoft hasent made it a reality!
I think 343 industrys should make it it's main focus.

HALO: Battlefront.

You could have a game type that pits flood vs. marines/covies(vote in the pre-game lobby on which group you have to be) were the flood has to infect everyone else. Basically infection but with more awesome.
