This may sound like I'm being close minded but why is it that whenever i try and find a review of any halo games or the offshoots such as "Halo Legends" that it always seems like they have never really done any research. i for one would like to read or hear a review that is balanced with an understanding of the novel series that explains pretty much everything that the games and the short films leave out. Please people pick up the books that games are either based on or are created to fill in the immense plot and story gaps that games create, a lot of the time you wont be disappointed.

By the way this is my first post so if I've annoyed anyone, or ruined anything for anyone, I'm sorry.

Welcome to the Escapist! Please... ignore the body under the cookies and something about stairs or whatever...

Regardless, we here at the Escapist enjoy a nice and tasty discussion to go along with our threads, so please, add something that we, the posters, can talk about in your thread.

Until then, this is the perfect place to advertise my Halo: Legends [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.176694-Halo-Legends-In-the-sights-of-SniperWolf427#5059366] review.

hah. SniperWolf. classic.

anyways, yes i can see your frustration, but perhaps you should add an element of conversation? for example, what the prerequisites could be to even become a reviewer?

oh and welcome to the escapist. make sure to watch insanum's video. look it up in the search bar. it'll fill you in pretty good.
Oh, and don't flame back if a troll with a flamethrower comes at you. Mod's can take care of trolls, but sometimes its hard for them to distinguish when there is an argument. so please, for the sake of everyone including yourself, be extremely courteous and try to avoid arguments, or diffuse situations asap.
hey, we all started somewhere, right?

A game should be able to stand by itself without the books, therefore there is no wrongdoing in those reviews.
I like the halo books, btw.

The problem is that the books, while indeed well written and filling in the plot holes quite nicely, shouldn't have to exist. You shouldn't have to buy something to understand the story in the game. The game itself should do that. If someone doesn't have access to the novels, then they are suddenly playing a game series with a huge gap and the appearance of new people that come out of no where and yet everyone else acts like were always there (like the brutes). The story presentation in the games is lacking as it assumes you already know what's going on, but without the whole Mass Effect thing of allowing you to check out a codex to learn more.

That being said, the series in total isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It's sort of like the Crusades being fought in space, and having the main character be a last resort weapon of the losing side of the war after being trained to fight pirates and such actually works. It isn't a shining gem of a series, but it isn't as bland as it first appears.

I fully support a game series extending into novels, or even being rewritten (the Resident Evil books were actually frightening, unlike their sort of corny games). However, the novels shouldn't replace sections of the story, especially when that story is the part that explains the motives, backstories, and history of everyone.

Welcome to the escapist by the way.
Don't call things rip-offs or Namless will steal your face.

I truly do enjoy the games, but part of a good game's job is narration, and when Halo leaves plot holes, it fails at creating and maintaining it's story and atmosphere.
