Probably the best tool I've ever seen in a game. Does anyone know how they were able to make this though?

I think it works by recording everything that happens in a game and then it saves it all as instructions for the Xbox along with the proper map layout and exact game type specifications. So when one goes into the theater and starts the video for replay, the game will fetch the instructions, start up a new game with the saved map layout and game type specification and follow them to the letter so it all looks like a mirror image of the game you just played. Not only is this better than saving a normal video of just one persons playthrough, it saves space on the HDD as well. Completely ingenious.

Woah guys! Let's turn down all these responses a notch. You're all making me dizzy!

I wish to discuss this although, sadly, I don't think anyone really knows how it's made besides Bungie themselves of course so you can also discuss it general if you like.

I once recorded a very short clip of a firefight where I jumped toward this hunter and this guy manages to shoot a PERFECT fuel rod right into my face while I was falling. I'm not kidding. RIGHT to the face. This was on Normal too mind you.

I love it. I think it basically just works like a replay and saves all the data as a game file then just replays it. I personally spend more time in Theater mode taking cool screen shots and seeing what my AI allies were up too when I wasn't looking. It's great seeing 2 large amounts of AI duking it out.

They've gone over the basic workings of it: it records what geometry and objects are present at the beginning of the game, all button presses by all players, and the seed used for the random number generator (that mixes up things like explosions and automatic weapons fire so they have variety)-- with that information you can recreate everything that happened, and that's why the files are so small, but also why rewinding is done in jumps, you can only fast-forward so fast, and turning them into standard video files takes a while and is done by severs instead of the 360, it has to process every fraction of a second to get the next one.
The thing is, it's not a new feature (for example a game they made back in 1994 also had it) but most games didn't really consider it until Halo showed its value.

Very interesting. Do you remember the source of that.

First of all, bumping your threads on this site is looked down upon intensely. Especially only like 15 minutes after it was made. Calm down and be patient.

OT: Yeah, they just record the data for the match and let the player go through it like a player, but obviously with different rules for movement and actions. Pretty simple, really. And I freaking love it. Heck, without it, I wouldn't have been able to make <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.246412-Pretium-Vita-A-Short-Machinima-Film>the machinima I made a while back.
