Halo Wars. Baby's first RTS. Now being that I'm an ex-halo fanboy, I bought the collecters edition at release I have this Halo Wars "Super Kit" and never touch it. Reason being that Halo Wars is like Halo/LotR BFME2 minus the epicness.

What are your thoughts on Halo Wars and are you willing to play it with me if so?

I found it to be incredibly boring. It was shallow as far as RTSs go and I didn't feel like I was actually doing anything. You can't even play as the Flood online.

I'm not really a fan of Halo, and I'm not a fan of RTS's. I prefer being the one doing the shooting, rather than relying on easily disposable units.

I found the best way to win the campaign was to research the hornets until they were uber then make the two super uber leet air units and send them all to attack the enemies base...

There were never any survivors.

I thought they did a great job porting the genre onto consoles. Sure, it lacks the depth and efficiency of a PC RTS, but for a console they did a great job. I personally enjoyed it (despite the fact that the story and soundtrack were horribly weak, thanks to the fact that Ensemble handles all that instead of Bungie).

I'd play with you. But it'l be a while: I'm on Mass Effect 2 right now, then immediately on to Bioshock 2 on February 9th, then only a month later comes Final Fantasy XIII. But sometime, I'd be all for playing with you. :)

I only play RTS games to throw billions of infantry into the middle of machine guns and bombs. Just the site of many virtual lives ending is awesome.

Well, from what I've been playing, it's...

...it's...

Umm... is there a word for the intense amount of awesome that is Mass Effect 2? I'm at a loss here...

Very meh to be honest.

It's a good shot at bringing RTS to consoles, but still doesn't compare to most PC RTS games. (sounds a bit elitist... but come on!)

Seems like a decent idea, and Ensemble did their best to make it work. Unfortunately for now at least it's simply impossible to have a truly deep RTS on consoles due largely to controls. Oh sure you can plug in a mouse & keyboard on the PS3 but that's just completely counter-intuitive to the very concept of laid-back & relaxed family room consoles. If you're going to be using Mouse & Keyboard on a console, you might as well just buy a nice PC and make your conversion official. So till a new control scheme comes up RTS will always been the ugly stepchildren of the console world.

That doesn't mean I can't applaud a good effort however. Halo Wars did the best with what it had and came out with a pretty entertaining experience. For a jaded PC gamer like myself it ain't much and it's simplistic as hell, but when you consider how many gamers there are out there who'd never even tried the genre before Halo Wars, well, it's a noteworthy effort and a good introduction to the genre.

Would still have preferred if Ensemble had made a new Age of Empires however. Sadly Microsoft made sure that'll never happen...

They can't handle the high APM multitasking clickfests that form the bulk of PC RTS. The same as how they can't handle arena shooter FPSs designed for the PC. I haven't played HW, but I can tell just from the video it's still hung up on the high-APM paradigm. Ensemble made the fatal decision right at the start and the result cannot help but be mediocre at best, no matter how hard they worked.

Consoles could perfectly well handle deep RTSs with the controls they have now. You could do something in the way of Herzog Zwei. You could do a realistic war RTS. In neither would your performance be limited by the controls.

Then it's a "just" a question of providing deep, immaculately balanced moves and options to work with - that is, making a good strategy game in realtime.

Remember the part when green people killed blue people in awesome like fashion while and important battle took place that no one cared about? Only part of the game I liked...... Well that and ODST stuck in a tower taking on an entire enemy force.....and winning?

I played the demo, as a PC RTS player, it was pretty shallow and repetitive, but my friends (360 gamers) thought it was really fun. Probably just because it was accessible, unlike most PC RTS's which require lots of strategic thinking and things. It was most certainly designed to be an RTS for the Halo crowd.
