Now don't worry. This isn't going to be a senseless "bash Halo thread" but something I've noticed. I go on alot websites and gaming forums and all I see there is "OMG HALO SUKS" threads. If so many people hate it, then why does it have such a huge fanbase?

I mean on any forum I go to the number of Halo haters seems to greatly out-weigh the number of likers.

Your thoughts? Opinions?

Depends where you're looking. I've seen some extremely vocal Halo supporters before. On sites like this, though, Halo bashers are simply more likely to speak up about their opinions. At this point, most people simply ignore them. Like Twilight or Religion, it's simply been attacked too often to be unexpected.

The people that like it are probably busy playing the game instead of arguing its greatness on the internet.

We hate it because we love it...plus they keep trying to sell the franchise out after they realized they will never be able to recreate the originals glory. But mostly everyone is just sick of hearing about it for 9 years or so.

I think this actually applies to a lot of popular media. One of the strange twists of modern popular culture is that we have come to consider "indie" to be cool, but really expanded that idea, so that the things our society considers cool are the things that are considered to have been unpopular.

Halo, being somewhat of a cornerstone for the modern shooter genre, and one of the most popular games of all time, then is an iconic symbol of what is not indie. That is to say, people think it is cool to say that they hate Halo, because it becomes a face for the old cool that is considered corporate or manufactured.

Personally speaking, I find it rediculous. I can't imagine any reason to hate Halo, even if I didn't enjoy it (which I don't, it's one of my favorite games to play online with friends), I wouldn't feel the need to hate it, because its fanbase does speak for its merit, and because it's done nothing to offend me.

I see a lot less Halo fans here because most of them are on Bungie's Halo 3 forum. There, they can argue amongst themselves and continue to give each other a worse and worse image.

I just hate the image that all Halo fans are loud mouthed and obnoxious idiots who insult people and are similar to angry screaming kids talking about how awesome Halo is and how anyone who disagrees is wrong and all that garbage. The thing is as joobnook keeps reminding us, the haters are usually far more obnoxious than the actual fans as the haters can so often (not always) be grouped into the category of trolldom. Also I think it's unfair to call the Halo crowd a huge number, I mean yes the Halo Nation is still a big one but it's not as big as it once was, their voices drowned out by the screaming commentors on Youtube videos and the millions of people who just make videos saying 'Halo fucking sucks, it's overrated, it's overrated because it sucks it sucks because it's overrated ETC'.... you can't still call it 'overrated' at this point.
Honestly the hater-fanboy debate has a nice visual metaphor of a big mean angry bully who towers over all the other children sitting in a sandpit shouting... nay bellowing at a small child who is just trying to play his game undisturped. The bully has a lot of friends and they are all accusing the smaller child of being the biggest mainstream audience who is loud mouthed obnoxious and never shuts the hell up. The Bullies are the haters, the little boy is the Halo Fanbase. That's how I see it anyway, the Halo fanbase really isn't all that bad seriously. They just want to play their game in peace and have fun doing so and despite the hate there is still growing numbers of fans for the game. But it's still in equal proportion to the haters and I think people need to realise it. I wish people would stop portraying insulting stereotypes as fact in all honesty.

maybe the halo fan's are more mature than we think and keep their mouths shut to avoid flamming. I'm not necessarily a halo fan because there is like 10 games i would rather play than halo but it seems this is a good explanation to the question. If you actually play halo online you aren't going to come across a hater very often. and there is usually like 500000 people online every day (or more). and thats a lot of people. Sorry if thats not a good number to put up. I don't actually own halo. I have just played it a few times with friends. I must say that i don't see anything wrong with the game, and maybe people just run their mouth to TRY and start a fight. That's how ''Warner Brother's Music Group Tube'' is anyways... :(

Everybody who's old enough or intelligent enough to surf the web and post on forums dislikes it. The rest comprise Halo's fanbase, with a few minor exceptions.

I got off the BNet forums just because, no matter what you said, if a topic wasn't about hating a weapon, rank, armor type, or part of the game, you would get flamed. Oh, and you would get flamed for those too.

Actually Vrex, you're the exact opposite of what I'm talking about. For example, When a reviewer on Gamecritics dared to give Halo3 a 7 (not actually a bad score), The comments section was flooded with people whose only method of responding was to shout FAG! at the top of their voices. It's people like this (on both sides of the argument) That give fans a bad name. If someone loves Halo, that's fine. If someone hates Halo, that's fine too. (I'm somewhere inbetween). But if someone is going to forgo a cohesive argument for shouting and swearing, that's definitely not fine at all.

I love Halo, its my favorite series.

And I've come to hate the haters because they never seem to shut the fuck up about how awful Halo is and how great whatever other game they love is, without providing any decent arguments.

"Halo 3 did nothing new for FPS's!"
Niether did COD4 but that is considered one of the greatest FPS games ever made.

I also hate some of the more devoted fans because they think that anyone who doesn't like Halo is a COD fanboy or whatever and therefor not worthy of life.

I once mentioned that I liked Halo while playing COD4, man, I have never recieved so many messages from people describing how they want to kill me. I also recieved a fair amount of genitalia shots from people with vision cams.

I don't think that many hate it. The internet has this nasty habit of magnifying one's feelings towards something.

A person will truthfully tell their freinds they aren't fond of it but when they hop on the internet that mild dislike turns into "HALO IS TEH FUCKING SUXXORS!!11!"

You're not looking deeply enough, what you see is the one guy who posts the "OMG HALO SUCKS" thread, then usually there are countless people who've replied telling the guy to shut up and move on.

Really? Hmm, when I say I hate Halo, it's because I really, really hate halo...

I think most people who hate it, like me, hates it mostly for it being the FPS version of The Sims. i.e the devil.
Okay see, but you may just be lending credibility to my point, because The Sims sits in the exact same iconic position as Halo.

Explain WHY you hate the sims. Don't just give us some obscure crap about "it's the devil". What is it about these games that has earned your ire?
