As long as you don't call yourself a motherfucking brony, it's okay to look at MLP.

SO I decided to watch an episode just now, and it was certainly different from what I expected. More fantasy stuff than little girl stuff.

It was also atrociously bad. Seriously, who can stand to watch that polished turd? Just 5 minutes in and I'm pretty sure my IQ dropped by 20 points.

Nothing wrong with not liking it of course. Just out of curiosity, what episode did you watch?

I've been kicking around the fandom long enough to know that clop is just the tip of the twisted, festering iceberg of horror that is the dark side of bronydom.

I've seen some things, man, and some stuff. I wouldn't recommend it.

First, I heard about bronies: Grown men like MLP? o_O Intriguing. I figured it must be pretty good if it can attract such a fanbase. So I Youtubed it, saw some clips, watched an episode... then another... and yeah, you know where this is going.

Fluttertwilight Sparkleshy is best pony.

All hail the mane!

My story is simple. I like cartoons, I check everything out that looks interesting or has a name in it that I know (Lauren Faust for example) so I checked it out about when the first season ended... And loved it for various reasons.
Same thing for me. I love cartoons and I love the colorful aesthetic of the show. I won't judge something in media til I experience it myself. I watched the first episode and yea... hooked. Its a great way for me to relieve stress and blow off steam.

Also. LUNA!!! /kneel

Call me late to the party, but I saw yesterday that every episode of Mlp:FiM was uploaded commercial free to YouTube, so I decided to open up my personal Pandora's box and watch the first few episodes. Little did I know that I had gone too deep, and now I'm have to watch the next episode regardless of any feelings towards doing so. It seems that I've become a brony overnight, and I'm scared now. (hold me)

So, Escapists, describe how you got hooked on the world of ponydom. How did you watch it, when did you watch it, and why.

btw Twilight Sparkle is by far the best pony. Deal with it.
The most important thing is to NOT panic. So what if you like a show made for little girls, that doesn't make you any less of a man. Right? ...Right? Heh heh, of course not.

>.>

<.<

Hah, seriously though. Good for you, for giving something a fair shot. I know I was guilty of going "Ponies? Bah, it's probably stupid and vapid like most kid's programming nowdays" at first. It is actually a surprisingly well-made show, and the people behind it know what they're doing.

...and yeah, Twilight is a good pony. No one's gonna deny that. Pink pony is best pony though :)

Wait until you get to the second half of the first season. That's really where the show picks up, then the second season starts strong and keeps running with it.

For me, it was a clip someone posted on these forums. Can't remember exactly which one, but it made me laugh, and convinced me to watch the first episode. Then I watched the second. Then I watched the third. Then I had to stop because it was Finals week, and while the break for comedic relief was appreciated, I didn't have time for more.

It also helps that, like a few other people in the thread, I like cartoons in general. I think I watch more cartoons than shows for grownups, although to be fair, "grownup" comedies are anything but these days, and grownup dramas don't involve swords/laserguns or mythical creatures/space ships much these days. Man I miss 90's TV.

i heard about my little pony through the escapist. i started out making fun of bronies but they kept bringing up that i never gave it a fair chance. i watched the two part premier and thought it was okay but not great. then i watched episode 3 and actually laughed a couple times. by the end of episode 4 i was in love with the show.

ps- you accidentally said twilight is the best pony, when you clearly meant to say applejack. honest mistake.

Oh, Jeez, don't go scaring him off! There's plenty enough on the 'light side' of the fandom that it's still worth checking out. You listen to some fans, and you'd think the vast majority of the fandom was into this stuff or something. Don't believe the hype! =P

OT: The Escapist posted a bunch of PMVs in a post back in May of last year. I watched some of them, found them amusing, looked up the first episode, and after getting over the whole 'I'm watching a girl's cartoon' feeling, I actually found I was enjoying the humour and the animation style. And lo and behold, I watched the rest of Season 1 and joined the fandom. It was good. Even made some friends through it!

That's what happened to me too *tears up* I was home sick and was just gonna watch one or two episodes to be able to keep up with the internet jokes. And?and? I GOT HOOKED! *cries harder*why can?t I stop watching ?

but i wasn't really a brony or even a fan until discord showed up. after that, i watched every single episode twice and became willing to buy mlp products
ohh and Applejack is best pony. all arguments are invalid (you said that just to spawn a brony flame war didn't you)

Welcome to the herd, OP. I tend to watch it distractedly at best. Come for the cultural references, stay for, well, the exact same thing. Also, run the fuck away from anything involving ponies and Rule 34. Most of the Bronies are nice guys (and gals), but I've talked to some cloppers who honestly think Cupcakes is the best thing ever.

Yeah. I just backed right out of that discussion, thank you very much.

Also, Discord is best pony! HE NEEDS HIS OWN FUCKING SHOW, GODDAMNIT.

No, I will never drop that issue. NEVA!

I used to not watch it because of the fans. Then I gave in and confirmed that it was a pretty good show.

Cant say I ever watched it. Although from what I've been able to discern via Google images, they appear to be vegetables with no limbs whatsoever, whereas its not too much of a stretch of the imagination to have ponies holding things with their hooves.

Of course that was just a minor issue I had with the show. I'd be able to overlook that and the outline thing if the rest of it was any good.

Eh, it's really not much different from being sexually attracted to Liara or Tali from Mass Effect, or any other sentient non-human with actual personality.

Anyway, I remember my first introduction to MLP, right after the conclusion of season 1. Someone posted a funny dubover, and I laughed at it while also noting how good the animation actually was. Still, at the time, I dismissed it as some childish show.

Then I heard that one of my closest friends also watched the show.

After that, I decided to sit down and at least watch the first two episodes, and by the end of the first, I knew I was hooked. Finding out that it was made by the wife of the creator of Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (with Lauren Faust having been a storyboard writer for both as well) just sealed the deal for me.

The dubover that started it all: Scenes from MLP combined with the audio ripped from the Starcraft 2 trailer. I don't even like Starcraft, but holy hell did the trailer make me laugh.

I have to say, that video synchs up to the Nine Inch Nails instrumental I have on in the background way better than you'd expect.

Veggie Tales was a big part of my childhood (despite my atheism from a young age). But yeah I don't get why MLP can't at least have them, like, picking things up with their mouths at least.

EDIT: Welp, nevermind about that last part.

It's actually only unicorn ponies that levitate things, and it's because the horns give them magic powers including levitation. The rest of them tend to move things around with their mouths, or occasionally their hooves when it makes sense.

Veggie Tales has plenty of reasons to not like it (the first of which is that the main point of the show is biblical lessons packaged in a cute wrapper for pre-schoolers, although I seem to remember that, like Sesame street, it had occasional bits of cleverness), but the way the vegetables pick up objects would be a minor thing.

Welcome to the cozy little family just don't pay attention to Uncle Clop in the corner. I got hooked on the show because of an episode of a polecats I used to watch where a fan asked the people running the podcast about mlp. A few weeks later the site that made the podcast made a video in their series called deathbattle where Rainbow Dash went against starscream and kicked his shiny metal ass. It was because of this that I decided to begin watching the show and I watched every episode during one weekend and the rest is history. Because of the deathbattle you will never be able to convince me that anyone other than Dash is best pony and from watching the show I find Rarity to be the worst.

Ya know. I tried to like that show. I really did. When it started to become popular, I watched the first 15 episodes over the course of a week. So I think it's safe to say, I gave it a fair shot. And while it had a few funny jokes, I mostly found the characters to be annoying, and the plot lines to be stupid, cliche, and predictable. So I gave up on it.

A while later I watched another 2 episodes when I heard John De Lancie was in it, but I didn't like those much either.
Just not for me I guess.

Season 3 episode 1
Well there's your problem. The Season 3 opener absolutely sucks compared to the Season 1 opener (and, well, most episodes in general).

If you actually want to give it a fair shot, I'd suggest watching Season 1 Ep 1+2, and then Season 1 Episode 16. Actually, pretty much any episode from season 1 barring the sleepover episode or Cutie Mark Crusader episodes are good for introductions to the series. They're the episodes that have the most parallels to Powerpuff Girls and other awesome cartoons from which MLP draws inspiration.
