It's not too hard to explain. Basically, people watch the show to get away from all the dark and gritty stuff that's overtaken nerd media for a while now.

Maybe I don't know what "Nerd Media" is but given the the video you show. I would say things like THE VENTURE BROS, Futurama and Robot Chicken would count. That said things like The Venture Bros, Futurama and Robot Chicken. ROBOT CHICKEN! Is dark and gritty? Really I mean really? The show where everything is a joke? Some Dark humor now and then doesn't make it Dark and Gritty. I mean unless you want to say The Spoony experiment is dark and gritty. So your reason to say it's diffident is your not looking. Like at all.

Aaaaaand random trivia for all: 'Love and tolerate' isn't actually an MLP meme at all; it's actually a relatively minor meme from the anime fandom originating from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. 4chan, being the melting pot of nerd culture (and friendship) that it is, adopted this in order to respond to MLP haters.

I first checked it out after someone compared it to Young Justice, saying they liked MLP better. I was impressed by the animation and kept checking out random episodes. What kept me going was a combination of good animation, a fun cast of characters (Applejack = best), and a surprisingly new and creative mythology.

That said, it never became anything more than just another kid's cartoon that I enjoyed, like Adventure Time or Gravity Falls. I NEVER really understood the whole Brony phenomenon. The people who try to overthink and analyze the show like it's super deep with deep characters (I like them, but come on); the plethora of fanfiction, most of which dealing with shipping; the obsession with shipping in general; the fetishizing of cartoon ponies; the obsession with background ponies who don't do anything; the forced and overused memes (I'm so goddamn sick of "20% cooler"); and the existence of BronyCon.


I think the best thing I got out of the series was that I discovered Ashleigh Ball's band Hey Ocean! and I've gotten into their music. I've also checked out the first issue of the comic book out of curiosity and it was pretty funny.

There's NOTHING WRONG with that stuff (I think RC and Futurama are hilarious), it's just that every once in a while people would like something that's down to Earth (or Equestria) and sincere for a break.

It's like most anime. Cheap and simple jokes. Like someone saying a few sentence, then a pause, and then a yay. (woo that really knocks em down) Moments of fake emotional scenes to trick you into thinking it has a heart when they're running out of simple joeks and storylines. And well that's it really. it's there for people who think random noises and pauses and yays and wee's are funny because they happen to have a pause infront of them. (Or what's even better, silly accents! Or just a silly thing that appears and runs across the screen! Don't even need to set up the joke or anything.) Or maybe there's a very minute argument, but the reaction is exaggurated. Exaggurated reactions/situation makes up most of the jokes really.

Could be because it's a freaking kids cartoon. But what do I know...

Frankly, I don't remember. It wasn't like it was some life-changing momentous moment. I was told by a lot of people that it was a decent show. I watched said show, and after a couple episodes I decided I liked it.

The people that get REALLY hooked have always confused me, though. To this day I can barely stand the Cutie Mark Crusaders, which turns me off of a solid third of the second season alone.

The first I heard of the show was when listening to an episode of the Rooster Teeth podcast in the summer of 2011, and they briefly discussed how one of them (Michael) had become a "brony." I initially assumed it was some ironic thing based around the toys, but Michael explained that it was a TV show he really liked. They moved on to a new topic before very long, and I paid it little more thought.

Then, on October 9 of that same year (a date I fully intend to remember for the rest of my life), Matt Frank a.k.a. KaijuSamurai, whom I follow on deviantART for his Godzilla artwork, posted some sketches of the Mane Six and brief summaries of the characters in the description. Perhaps most influential was the mini-bio for Pinkie, which was simply, "WATCH THIS!" After that and a bit of further reading on Wikipedia, I needed no more convincing.

I resurfaced at about the same time the next day, having done nothing but watch every episode up to that point (the first season plus the two-part second season premiere). I'm extremely thankful I was on Fall Break at the time, because I have no idea how I would have managed to do any schoolwork when there was an entire internet-full of ponies to voraciously consume. Which is how I spent the remainder of the break, and indeed a huge portion of my life since then. Needless to say - especially considering that the show indirectly led me to the likes of Team Fortress 2 and Portal, TV Tropes, and this very website - I regret nothing.

(Also, Twilight is indeed best pony, but Fluttershy remains my favorite regardless.)

Yeah, that would be a Straw man. My point was there is just as many thing that are not Dark and Gritty. Yet you paint it as if it's an epidemic. You want to bring up the Batman movies I will bring up the Iron Man movies, or any Avengers movie. For another thing they are comedies? So what? They don't count? Why?

The fact that Futurama is a comedy doesn't make less sincere or less down to earth, whatever that means. Unless you want to be the one person that didn't find "Jurassic Bark" sad. It just seams like a dismissal of the argument. All of these shows aren't dark or gritty. "Well they are comedies, so they don't count."

I can see how the CMC could be annoying, but I just find them so darned cute.

I was frustrated at first at the show focusing on them instead of the M6 I was used to, but they grew on me.

I don't enjoy CMC episodes either.
I find them very adorable in episodes where they star as cameo, but they act rather childish in their respective episodes. That and I prefer watching my more favourable ponies in action.

Playing the victim I see. All your points there are fallacy's or a shallow physiology technique to advert the blame, or avoid the question all together. Look if you don't have an answer you don't have an answer. But avoiding the question, and answering with hostility where only curiosity was given, will not get you far in anything.

You see I'm not talking down to you. I just don't want to be talked down to. I simply expect when I point out your using a straw man or faulty generalization. That you one acknowledge it or explain why it's not faulty generalization. So far all I have seen is denial and avoiding the question. Well I didn't get into it.

I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes after one of the big flamewar threads about MLP on the forums. It wasn't bad, but I personally didn't find it as great as everyone else seemed to either.

So not bad, but I don't understand the rather big obsession the internet as a whole has with it.

As much as I genuinely find it cute and funny and heart warming, with awesome design, I think a lot of its' popularity is due to a wider movement of wanting to shout: Stuff doesn't have to be dark, gritty and realistically coloured to be awesome!
