Hang on, I just realized something.

Alright, a common staple in Sci-Fi is the data-pad, or something similar to it.
Star Wars
Star Trek
Mass Effect etc... all of those sci-fi universes have data pads...
And so do we. The iPad is a data pad. It's kind of anti-climactic when you realize that Apple built one of the most common futuristic staples.
I also want one now, for some strange reason.

I don't know if this thread has any discussion value beyond that, but it's something that completely blew my mind when I realized it.

I guess, I can salvage a thread from this by asking: What Sci-fi staple technology do you fancy, that we're already seeing or that you think we'll see in the near future?

You're right. Too bad the ipad is an ipiece of shit.
Bluetooth is pretty cool, like the communicators they used to have on sci fi shows. Just clip it to your ear and you have instant communication.

Hmmm... a W40K Dataslate...
I won't accept it until it has been approved by Gunner Jurgen.
To do so, some porn may have to be uploaded to it, though...
Anyway... holograms! I want my war table to be fully functional and holographic by... ummm... soon!
Also, lasers. Here, but need work done on them.

I just think its amazing that when the original Star Trek was made it seemed to be filled with all sorts of wonderful fantasmic tech, and now with the exception of a few bits (FTL travel, teleporters and phasers) we have all of it, if not actually exceeded it in some places.

Now that I think about it, why don't Apple and Amazon use the sci-fi angle as the selling point.

"Become a futuristic space hero, or at least feel like one while you're searching for porn!"
Bam! A million instant purchases, right there.

Lol, instant saturation of the 16-25-year old male market, right from that advert.

When did medical staff, technicans, scientists and soldiers get issued with Tri-corders?

Still waiting for those hypodermic sprays too. Make all those weak people who can't stand needles get on with life.
There was an article on here a while back about an actual 'hypospray' device that used lasers rather than needles. I'll see if I can dig up a link.

EDIT: here it is:

Where's my Hovercar?!

And no, those stupid hovercraft-with-propellor things don't count. I'm talking anti-gravity, people!

We have holograms y'know, the Japanese have been using it to make concerts! Proof right here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.244564-Japanese-Pop-Star-Draws-Crowds-Despite-Being-a-Hologram]

Hmm, future tech I want (doubt we'll see it in the near future though), is either a time travel machine of sorts (screw Godwins Law of Time Travel, I'm takin' the chances), or a Time Manipulation Device (as seen in "Singularity"). Would be so sweet to control time itself xD

Face it, we've already invented most things from decades old science fiction. Are our lives any more fulfilling for it? Actually, who cares. I want to leap ten years into the future and be playing NBA 2K21 in photorealistic detail on my PSP 3.

p.s. I want one of those omni-tools from Mass Effect. Then I'll be impressed.

This is the reason I got one.
That's not funny.
Ouch dude. I thought it was.

I have no interest in all these things that can do what my laptop can, except look way more expensive and be easier to steal.

Yeah, I saw that thread, but I meant real, true holograms.
The grainy crap that you read about in W40k books would be nice.
Or just a really good, real hologram.
Although, the stuff they used for Miku is quite good, it would be kinda useless in the situation where you'd want the hologram to move away from the stage.
I want Red Dwarf holograms with Light Bees ;~;

I'd love some kind of wrist mounted holographic computer display with touch sensitivity and minifacturing. SO. COOL.
