So today is (or would have been) Joe Strummer's birthday. So, in respect for the greatest man in rock 'n' roll history (in my opinion, of course), I'm listening to my whole Clash discography.

Discussion value: who is your music role model? If you don't have one, your artistic or literary role model? What musician, author, artist, poet etc shaped your life one one way or another?

I didn't realise it was his birthday.

But yeah, mine is Greg Graffin.
He's the lead singer of Bad Religion, and he's insanely smart (has a doctorate, written a few books about evolution and the like) and I love his solo albums too.

Oh, so bittersweet. Great to remember, sad that he's gone.

I'd say my musical role model would be Jeff Tweedy or David Bowie.

I'd say my main musical influences are Frank Zappa, Joe Strummer, Les Claypool and Chuck Schuldiner. That's not a list, by the way. Those four dudes are tied for first.

Oh, I didn't realise it was Joe Strummer's birthday! That is rather awesome. 'twas Dimebag Darrel's yesterday too.

Musically I'd say I was most inspired by Phil Lynott and Frank Bello. Frank's solo on Got The Time was one of the biggest things that convinced me to start playing bass. Despite that, my biggest hero is Kurt Cobain. I suppose that'll earn a few tuts and sighs from some people, but I suggest reading Heavier Than Heaven by Charles R Cross. Even if you're not a fan it's a brilliant book.

Probably Joe Strummer or Syd Barrett. I mean I love a lot of other musicians, but those 2 are the ones that really did the most "deep" music for me, the music that has more affect than just rocking out and partying. As for a literary model, Ernest Hemingway or Hunter S. Thompson. I love each of their styles of writing, and think they're in the Top 5 American Writers ever

Good choice, man, he's one of mine as well. Graffin is actually quite an awe-inspiring person because of all that he's achieved. A true legend.
I just realised I didn't list all of mine so, uh: Strummer, Graffin, Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Kieth Buckley (Every Time I Die) and Neil Peart (Rush).

Didn't know it was his birthday. I will now be listening to the clash for the rest of the day in his honour.

As for my musical heroes, I have many but the one that really sticks with me is Bob Dylan. His lyrics just blow my mind, and he's still going strong after all these years. :D

Freddy Mercury.

Been a Queen fan since I was a kid.

Dragged my wife to see a tribute band a few years back. Also took her to see the queen musical, first time i'd ever set foot in a theatre.

I don't have a role model. But I think it's cool that Robert Johnson claimed to have sold his soul to the devil.

Happy Birthday Joe, a real shame you had to die so soon the world could really use your political insights right about now. :c Guess I will be celebrating by dusting off my London Calling and Sandinista records and kicking back.

As for my musical influences I would definitely say Joe Strummer, Pete Townsend, Paul Simonon, Niel Peart, Roger Waters, and Simon Rix.
