To all Brits on The Escapist, Happy St Georges Day!
To everyone else, Happy St Georges Day to you too!

To all of those who don't know, April 23rd is the day us English folk celebrate our cultural heritage, namely, the story of some guy called George who saved a fair maiden by slaying an evil dragon.

So to avoid a useless thread (apart from well-wishing), what is your favourite myth or legend?
I have to admit, mine is the story of Beowulf, I mean, you beat up a monster, then his mother comes after you?? Awesome.

He is also the patron of Portugal, yet he never been in either of the countries, as he spent his life in the middle east and southeastern europe. And actually none of the countries existed in the 3rd century when he lived, the Roman Empire was still owning our asses.

Nifty, I learned something - I'd never even heard of St. George's Day until just now.

In terms of my favourite legends, although I can't name anything specific, it'd definitely be something from Greek mythology. They had the most interesting gods.

I don't think I've ever celebrated St George's day in my life. Neither has anyone I know. I've never known anyone make much of a big deal out of it. Sure there will be plenty of people out drinking and partying tonight but I'd say that's just because it's a friday.

And my local is £2 a pint and work has allowed casual clothes (shorts and flip-flops for me). Reason enough for me to celebrate, I'll celebrate anything really.

Yes, goooood... celebrate, English, celebrate all you want...

[sub]For then, you will not see me sneak up and steal Northern Ireland from you! Mwuhahahaha[/sub]

As for favourite myths, I'm going to be a snarky bastard and say Cuchulian.
We turned our backs on purpose so you could steal Northern Ireland. Didn't want to seem mean just disowning it so we let you steal it :D

lol jokes!

Shame we don't celebrate it in full spirits and give people days off to celebrate. Oh well.

Happy St George's Day to the Escapist!

I'm properly hacked off because usually me and my mates go out and celebrate St George's Day but I couldn't get the day off work. Will most definately be hitting the pubs around 6 though, even if I will have to play catch-up!

As for legends, I gotta go with Beowulf as well. A true epic.

Happy St. George's day to all at The Escapist especialy the english :).

My favourite myth would be the really old supernatural myth as the uk were one of the first countries to have vampires and werewolf myths in the western world also there proper ones that will instanly rip your heart out as soon as they see a mortal.

Today is also Shakespeare's birthday (probably--it's a long story). I'll be celebrating by watching opening night of Macbeth at the Globe in London.

England isn't a catholic country so why would we celebrate a day for a patron saint. We get days off Christmas, Easter if you are religious. There are days like the Queen's diamond jubilee coming up if you are especially patriotic. Bah humbug.
