This is my first thread just to let you know but whatever.

Do you have something you like or are interested in but when you have to explain it to someone who has no idea what it is about, you can't explain it or it sounds ridiculous when you do?

For me it would be warhammer 40k. I love the fluff but when my mom asked me about it, I couldn't find anyway to describe it to her

Mafia. The psychological mind game, not the XboX series. It always comes out as lame RP, so I never tell anyone I play it. Literally no one in real life knows.

I guess this is also a good place to say my guilty pleasure is that I like a Linkin Park song: Breaking The Habit. It's the only one I like, and I can't explain why I like it, but I can't tell anyone because "ohmehgosh linkin park watareyou 8??".

And now I can live happy again.

MLP:FiM.
Tried to explain it to a friend. Had no success. Told him to watch it. Success!

Tried to explain it to the ridiculously hot girl in my bed, realized I still had no idea how to do it.... Got her to watch it. Success(now she wants a pony <_<)!

40k is easy to explain...if you're me (I could teach a college-level course about 40k).

A good way to not seem crazy: be an expert on the grim darkness of the far future where there is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods....but ALSO be really fond MLP:FiM.
They sort of....cancel out each others' implied eccentricities..... XD

But really, that's the first thing that I can't figure out how to explain. Although, it did take me a while to explain Doctor Who to my family

All of my interests on the internet. They're not awkward or inappropriate, most of the time the average person would think they're pretty cool, but just not their thing and so they lose interest with some kind of "that's nice, let's change the subject" neutrality poker face. (In a manner of speaking)

Topics like military aircraft between 1960-1990, The NASA Apollo missions, and most varieties of engineering related to infrastructure, mechanical safety or steam locomotives.

They're all not hard very hard to explain, people just don't seem to care enough to want them explained, which is why they're hard interests.

Discworld. Sure, it's easy to talk about Harry Potter, since EVERYBODY has read it and knows what you're talking about. Try explaining Discworld to someone ignorant.

RoosterTeeth. No, seriously, HOW do you do it? The best I've got is "online production company," but even that's horribly vague. Can someone help me out here?

Oh yeah, also Nickelback and ponies.

Yeah, just look at my avatar. Most things I'm into I find pretty easy to explain to people, but MLP:FiM is a difficult one. I don't mind people knowing I like it, and I'm proud of my interests, but it's not at all easy to explain. Oh, and the other thing I have difficulty explaining... Watersports fetish. Try explaining that to someone who isn't into it.

Wut?

You don't need an hour, just a better summary.

38,000 years in the future mankind's galactic empire is a harsh place to live where the value of a person's life is held about as highly as a bullet. The empire is lead by a 50,000 year old man with god-like psychic powers who is trapped on the brink of death by arcane machines. His Imperium has become a harsh and superstitious place. Countless billions of human soldiers fight to protect it, and countless die in the effort every day. Mankind is beset on all sides by nightmarish alien monstrosities, and threatened from within by daemonic incursion. Mankind's greatest defenders are bio-engineered super soldier warrior-monks whose entire lives are dedicated solely to becoming perfect warriors in the interest of annihilating the enemies of mankind.
There are legions of skeletal self regenerating robot warriors, a race of space elves on the verge of extinction after accidentally almost wiping themselves out by awakening a dark god, their psychotic cousins who've dedicated themselves to appeasing said dark god, orks who live purely for the thrill of battle, traitor human factions, daemonically possessed human factions, a species that acts like an innumerably huge intergalactic locust swarm made up of 6-limbed exoskeletal dinosaurs with the instinctive drive to devour all life in the galaxy. .....and then there are little grey men who are kinda Japanese....

No joke. Discworld is very different from most sci-fi, even.

Explaining CCG's is difficult. Explaining why Monopoly is boring, but I love Settlers of Catan, et al. is just impossible.

Dwarf Fortress. You like, middle manage some dwarfs and they dig up rocks and then you watch them party. And it is all in ASCII. Occasionally a giant zombie magpie flies up from the well and eats everyone.

I don't think so, no. My interests are pretty easy to comprehend.

I might have a hard time explaining some of the games I play, though.

A hard-to-explain interest? Gaming (to a person who has limited experience playing them).

My dad has only played DOOM way back when, and my mom only ever played Pong. For both of them, they get eyestrain from playing a game for 60 sec (my mom could not even play Guitar Hero, because of the RUMBLE, even when turned off, she can't).

To their eyes, they see gaming as a time waster, and try to deny me the ability to play them.

(Example: I have no homework, no other commitments, and they say nope.avi, no gaming for you on school nights.)

Sigh, If only they could see what I see...

I was saying more in the line of the fluff, like Gaunt's Ghosts or Ravenor. It requires a lot of backstory to somewhat understand it to a non-nerd
