Any game that demands concentration, skills, and training. Or a serious view on bludgeoning murder.
As a note, people typically do not like old threads to be resurrected.
Why are you telling me that?

Because you apparently don't know that, seeing as you brought back a thread that has been dormant for close to a year.

Why are you mentioning that in this thread, cause I don't know which of my threads you are referring to. You're a little out of context now.

It's perfectly in context, as it is this very thread that I am referring to.

A lot of people mention hardcore games, but how do you define a hardcore game?

A while back I used to think of hardcore games as games where you spawn on the level and are then royally owned by legions of enemies or a platformer where you need exact timing and skill or the platform disappears beneath your feet resulting in instant death.

Now with the focus on casual games, is every game that's not casual now considered hardcore?

(I usually define hardcore games as games that are so difficult they have a vertical learning curve.)

So what's everyone's thoughts on "hardcore" games?
My definition goes like this:
A hardcore game is one that is not accessible to everybody from the get go. Hardcore games require past experience at games in order to play from picking them up, i.e. not most Wii games.

I define a Harcore game as a game that only a very experienced gamer can play and even then it takes a substantial degree of learning and practice.

The kind of game where if a Casual gamer got it, it would take them 10x longer than normal to figure out/play and by the time they were done (if they stuck with it) they would no longer be casual... but would be more likely to give up in frustration/confusion long before that point.

Basically very in depth/complex games that are directed at people who invest massive amounts of time in playing games.

I sort of misunderstood, thought you meant I've started a repeated thread. Oh well, no harm done, except this huge amount of space we've taken up.

Haha it's all good, besides it wasted enough time for me to get off of work, so it's a good thing in the long run.

It's how you play not what you play. 'Casual' games like Bejeweled and Peggle had some epic high scores that take serious 'hardcore' playing to reach. On the other end of the spectrum, 'hardcore' games can be played casually just for the fun and without the competition.

It's probably worth noting a "hardcore" game is one you shouldn't expect to win from the moment you pick it up, at least not without practice. Megaman 1, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy 1, Ghosts and Goblins (Super Ghouls and Ghosts), Battletoads, and Serious Sam are great examples. These games were "fair" in that they erected hurdles (or skyscrapers) for you to vault over, never lowering the bar because you were bad at the game. With their challenges firmly in place, they dared you to beat them, and actually seeing the ending of the game was a success worthy of bragging rights. I can still say I've never legitimately beaten Final Fantasy 1, Battletoads, or Super Ghouls and Ghosts, the latter of which is WTF-impossibly hard and unforgiving.

Just think of the last "casual" game you played where you were actually proud you finished it and saw the ending. It's pretty much expected these days, isn't it?

Peggle is hardcore! Um yeah I hate the whole hardcore and casual argument, gamers just tend to be sucked into media buzz words too much it seems. Also yay for necro!

Casual games are something you can pick up and play for 5 minutes or 3 hours at the same result. No story, no rewards, just high scores and color-coding and what have you.

Mainstream games are balanced between easy to play, fun to master. Like the majority of FPS's and other multiplayer games.

Hardcore games are games that are hatefully difficult, that punish the player for the slightest mistake and demand perfection at every turn.

Another good way to think of it is Casual=Bejeweled, Mainstream=Halo, Hardcore=Contra/Ninja Gaiden.
