I'm sorry is the argument here "how dare this clown try to be funny"?
It less to do with her being a clown and more to do with what she is actually saying here, and Poison Ivy acting like a Goth chick.
I mean I get Harley is a clown and is supposed to be funny, but her spouting these 4th wall breaking jokes and references ala Deadpool feels insincere.
I'd say Ivy is more apathetic, than acting like a stereotypical goth chick. Honestly Sam, I don't see the big deal. It's just a teaser. Harley has broken the 4th wall some of the time in the comics. The Joker has done it plenty of times too. Maybe to not Deadpool levels, but so what? If you don't want to watch the movie, don't. No one is pointing a gun to the back of your skull. This looks more interesting the adaption of the Killing Joke or the live-action Suicide Squad movie. And as for the Venom movie; it's so bad it's good category. My older brother actually, genuinely, enjoyed the movie, but that is expected from him.
Its just how I see the state of Superhero stuff in general these days and this teaser is a symptom of what the masses demand for Superheroes to be like. I will never get something as serious and with in-universe integrety as the Nolan movies or Watchmen or V for Vendetta. In this current superhero cinema climate I doubt I will even see anything as dramatic Kingdom Come or anything as grim as Arkham, A Serious House on Serious Earth, because sadly Humor, Fun, and Action takes precedent.
I just saw Venom and I am just shocked at how "Un-Venom" the charcater was as far as I know. Like lets just say I have no idea how the character is gonna be a badguy to Spiderman once to two meet considring the exact portrayal of the charcater I just witnessed. Its hard for me to see Tom Hardy doing evil asshole things to Tom Holland in this same universe. Like I am starting to almost get why people wanted Venom to be R-Rated for one.
I would not mind a movie adaption of Kingdom Come, live-action or animated. For the current state of superhero movies and shows, they still have their serious moments. Maybe not to levels of the Crow, The Dark Knight Trilogy, or V For Vendetta. While I don't mind serious superhero story, I hate dark, grim and gritty for the sake of it as well. There is a reason why the comic book crash happened in the 90s. Besides, you will get your serious superhero story in a couple of months with Glass (I know it's not a comic adaption). So there is your dramatic superhero story starting the new year.
The Comic Book Crash of the 90s had nothing to do with comics being dark and gritty, and in all honesty from what I have seen of 90s they look rather campy by today's standards. Like Black Suit Superman with Guns was no Nolan Trilogy or even Man of Steel. If anything its more like Toonami level anime edge, the whole "TO THE EXTREME!!!" kind of thing.
Its more complex then that. The primary factor I remember being the most prominent was this situation where the comic book giants were making all these prestige and premium and limited time only kind of comic books where fans can actually preserve them in an attempt to sell them decades later because of old comic books from the 1940s suddenly being worth millions of dollars. Like Action Comic #1 is worth enough money to feed a starving village and then some. And comic book companies tried to take advantage of that.
I am saying this out of memory though so if you want to know more about that watch Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked:
