And they've managed to stay consistently good, for the most part. Well deserved award.
This. The movies could be better sure, but seeing as most trilogies end up sucking already at the second, not to mention third part, HP films held up really well. Which reminds me, I have to go see the latest one... just find it a little odd that people randomly label it as either awesome or absolutely awful and I can't really see a pattern in why they love/hate it.

Because we live in a black/white society. There is rarely a middle ground. Harry potter i would say is mediocre; it never really astounded but it was never really that bad. Although I would argue the first two films were the poorest, it improved with the third and kept up a reasonable standard for the rest of the series.

Hmm, interesting. I'd say the first two were pretty good/ok, third was fantastic and fourth was the crappiest of the lot.

It wasn't a bad movie, but they dropped John Williams at that point and the replacement (*checks* Patrick Doyle) could not hold a candle to him, which I very much felt throughout the movie. A simultaneous change of director to Mike Newell also seems to have been a pretty bad choice because there were a lot of scenes that were unintentionally hilarious and simply bad (the "aaaaaah" girls anyone?).

From then on I really loved the movies (barring the last one that I didn't see yet as I said). I loved the dark tone and it was executed really well. The fifth movie, Order of the Phoenix was so far the pinnacle of the series for me, it was really amazing in every single regard. (*checks again*) Nicholas Hooper really picked up the music again (perhaps I'm the only one who notices the music, but it had a really, really big effect on me and the changes from third to fifth movie were really felt) and David Yates did a brilliant job of directing it, as well as the Half Blood Prince (Deathly Hallows pt. 1 remains to be seen, will enjoy it I think though)

I can't really remember the fourth film too well if I am going to be honest. I still hold over the films which I remember that the first and second were the worst, but the series has changed so much since then it could be as a result of the change in tone. I am not the greatest fan of the dark tone too much; I like the direction but I do not believe it is executed as well as it could be. For the most part it seems that they have just added a greyish/blue filter to every scene, and it just seems to wash everything out. It reminds me of how most modern day games are overly grey/brown if anything.

I would recommend the most recent one. Although I do have my various problems with the film it stands up well I guess. It doesn't really push any boundaries for the series, but its worth checking out.
