How many of you think there should be such an online game? Me, definitely. This game would rock out if done well.

Just playing as like a student of Hogwarts? Picking a specialty, I suppose it could have potential.

As long as it doesn't try to force the actual Harry Potter book stuff into it and just let the player take full advantage of the world itself.

...This thread made me think there was one, I feel lied to xD

Wizard 101?

Anyway the rest of your post yeah that would be pretty good. Don't follow the books just have it be in the world and possibly around the time of the first wizarding war or maybe even another wizarding war in the future where you get to pick your side good or bad.

You can't have armor though. The entire game has to be completely focused on spells. I've thought of this before, and I came up with 2 beginning possibilities. You either begin as an adult or go through a tutorial-ish stage at one of the three schools. Maybe there would be a special perk for each school, as well as a special perk for starting out as an adult.

That sounds like a rather good idea, and I wouldn't be surprised if it went ahead. I mean, seriously, harry potter has been trying to find a way to get a good video game going... this could be it.

A harry Potter MMO, eh?

Well, how about this for an idea: First part of the game, you go to Hogwarts, and take a personality quiz to determine which house you're in. Then, you go to classes, play Quidditch, pull pranks on the teachers, that kind of stuff. When you're in 5th year in game, just like in the books, you get to choose a career path, and go with it. This would essentially be the equivalent of classes in WoW. While in Hogwarts, you also choose to associate with either The Ministry or The Dark Arts.

That's pretty much all I have at the moment.

I find the concept would be interesting if it was set 20 years after the last book. It could be at a time when dark magic is re-surging and Harry Potter and his friends are respected and important wizards in the Ministry or Hogwarts. You could be a student at Hogwarts or a young adult just fresh out of the school, fighting for the established good faction or the rebellious bad faction.

Check Byond.com

They have like five Harry Potter games. If 145-ish players count as 'MMO'. Most of them are roleplay, though.

Sounds rather good to me in all respects, but I think that it would probably be the Order of the Phoenix instead of the Ministry. The Ministry is more an inept bureaucratic machine than the 'good guys'.

Though, I like the personality quiz to get a house a lot. Although there would probably be a lot of whining about it and you'd boil down to Gryfindor players or Slytherin players.

Depends on what they do, and how they do it. If its a serious MMO, that appeals to MMO gamers, fans of the series, role players, and people that dont fit into any of those cliques who just wanna try out a fun game, then yeah. I'd play it.

Through it'll probably be some stupidly simple browser-based/facebook/smart phone game.

if they handle everything right it could be a great mmo.
quoted for the truth. there is no reason why it has to be bad. it just more than likely will be because they will try to go just for the screaming fan girls. if they made something that oculd bring in the fan girls and the hardcore mmo vets then it would be amamzing.

I was thinking something that was in it's own universe of sorts as well. I wouldn't want it to follow too strictly to the books either. The only problem I see with this is how one would keep the spells from being unbalanced. The books make for a nice story but Rowling never really set any real limits on what you could and couldn't do with a wand and that could be very problematic for game devs to figure out. They need to duplicate the awesomeness of having a wand in real life but still keep it under control.

But if they could do it, make it really good, I would play that game in an instant.

Most of these comments boil down to "If it were awesome, it would be awesome." And I agree. Hopefully, it would be after the books' time frame. Exploring Hogwarts would be pretty fun.

It sounds like it could have some potential, just as long as it didn't try to tie in with the books.

I'd totally be a Death Eater.

I could see it happening. It might be good, OK, or possibly complete garbage. It would take an experiment to be certain. There's plenty to the Harry Potter universe to make a game out of.
