Harry Potter Spinoff Film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Gets Release Date

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter spinoff film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released in theaters in November of 2016.

Revealed to be a film trilogy by Warner Bros. earlier this year, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133364-Harry-Potter-Spinoff-Fantastic-Beasts-and-Where-to-Find-Them-to-Be-a-Trilogy] the Harry Potter spinoff book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hit theaters in November 18, 2016. The film, which is based on the 54-page book of the same name, currently has no director, nor stars attached. It is known, however, that the film's script is being written by Rowling herself, and will serve as the author's screenwriter role debut.

Originally introduced in the Harry Potter book series as a textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was published in 2001 and will feature "magizoologist" Newt Scamander and is set seven decades before Harry Potter & Co. make their way to Hogwarts. The stories themselves are neither prequels or sequels to the boy wizard's adventures, but will be connected to the wizarding world Rowling concocted for Harry Potter.

Just in case you're wondering if video games will be part of the equation, the answer is a definite yes. In an earlier press release by Warner Bros., [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127733-Harry-Potter-Spinoff-Film-Series-and-Games-Are-in-the-Works] it mentioned that the company is planning to develop Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for "videogame, consumer products and digital initiatives businesses," which will link with Rowling's Pottermore.com digital hub built around the Harry Potter universe.

Harry Potter fans might want to mark November 18, 2016 on their calendars for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's film debut -- even though there's little to no chance Harry Potter himself will make an appearance. But hey, at least we'll get to see Rowling's wizarding world on the big-screen once more.

Anyone excited for this or are you worried Rowling might be stretching it a bit too far in making a 54-page book into a film trilogy?

As long as they add a lot of content then it'll be fine. There's a lot of material and potential in the exploration and cataloging of the creatures even if the book itself is tiny.

To be honest, I really enjoyed this little book. If they are going at it from the angle of the actual writer of the book and how they came across them then that's a lot of potential. From what I've read, that is what they're doing.

Just a trilogy? What's the bet it gets stretched out a bit before it's finished?

The fact that a 54 page book is a trilogy is just plan stupid. Now a 54 page book being turned into a trilogy with a two part ending, that I'm definitely behind.

For all of you who didn't read the book, it's just a bunch of descriptions of magical creatures, kind of like an encyclopedia. If they're going to make a trilogy off of it, there's got to be a lot of new material, mostly in the department of characters and plot. My hope is that it features an Australian poacher and dragon fights.

I'm hoping that they get a new visual aesthetic for the film. The last four Potter films were utterly drab looking. As mediocre as they are, the Columbus films nailed the visuals.

Well, at least it's not an octalogy? That was a reference. Anyways, it's good to see things being added to the same universe without being connected to the original source for no reason.

Am I the only one really hoping this turns into a nature documentary style movie?
Oh absolutely. I'm actually thinking this would work better as a series of nature documentaries, kind of like Walking With Dinosaurs, but with fictional creatures.

Or maybe go Steve Irwin style. Newt Scamander, The Dragon Hunter, or something like that.

"Today we'll be huntin the most dangerous, most ferocious dragon of em all: the Hungarian Horntail. Ere's one now. Crikey, that's a big feller. Better keep some distance or he'll bite me nads off!"

A 54 page book is now a trilogy. Do you know what we have to blame for this. Do you know what we have to blame for this?

THANKS FOR GIVING HOLLYWOOD ANOTHER PRICE GOUGING SCHEME, PETER. THANK YOU VERY FUCKING MUCH.

I'm really curious about what this is going to be like though I'm a bit weary about what it could be...I've said before that if this movie plays like Walking with Dinosaurs or, Disney's Bears only in a Fantasy setting then it'll make this a really unique and interesting film. I can't think of any other movie like that anyway...the closest thing was that Dragon Documentary Discovery did a few years ago and that was AWESOME.

It saddens me to see that Rowling is a one-trick pony :(
She has recently written a murder mystery, other children's literature, and is working on a more adult themed series. Perhaps you should check her web site and the publishing news sites once in a while.

Perhaps P. L. Travers should have gone to Warner Bros. for a more faithful imaging of her books.
God help Star Wars. And I'm and atheist.

She has recently written a murder mystery under a pseudonym that flopped very, very badly. It gained traction only when it was revealed who the real author was. Her "other children's literature" has not gained any critical acclaim either. So what does she do? Once again focuses on her only success - first that whole Pottermore nonsense, now a movie based on some obscure book from the novel. I hold her in great regard since I'm an aspiring author myself, but at this moment in time, Rowling is, unfortunately, a one-trick pony.

Okay... I know this would be a stretch, given how there's barely anything to work on besides the date and the fact this it's a trilogy, for example... But, I'm going to assume J.K. Rowling would be making an "unforeseen" cameo in at least one of those movies...
