Why can't they just give us an MMO in the Harry Potter universe already?! PLEASE?!
I was under the impression that's what Pottermore was.
Its a glorified point and click adventure.

OT: Ah, yes. Corporate milking at its finest. This is going to be a fun train wreck to watch.

That's not NEARLY expansive enough as compared to what I'm thinking about.

Ah yes, now that the corpse of the Potter films has finally cooled, it is time for the corporate sodomy to begin in earnest. Hope you had fun being a respected writer Rowling, because it's all down hill from here.
She's a respected writer? News to me, I'm pretty sure most sci-fi/fantasy authors don't care much for, or even think that highly of, Rowling.

She releases a book under the pseudonym Robert Galbrait, but its leaked that its actually her before release. The book doesnt do brilliantly, and she gets worried that shes lost the golden goose.
What aboot The Casual Vacancy? Did that do bad?
I dont know how it sold, but it got average reviews. Noone seems to think it was bad, just noone particularly cared about it.

I may be speaking out of my ass here, but this is how I see the sequence of events thus far...

J.K. Rowling makes Harry Potter franchise. Its hugely successful, but shes done with it, and moves on to other things.

She releases a book under the pseudonym Robert Galbrait, but its leaked that its actually her before release. The book doesnt do brilliantly, and she gets worried that shes lost the golden goose.

The group she released the franchise rights to have decided to use them. Rowling panics and jumps on board.

...Maybe cynical of me, but it seems like until her new book flopped, she wanted no part of anything Potter related in the future, but now shes on board with whatever as long as it pays.
The Casual Vacancy sold 1 million copies in it's first 3 weeks. While it's not as much as HP, it's still really good.
Rowling is worth £560 million (supposedly). She won't be taking up a part time job in McDonald's any time soon.

OT: I hope she's doing this for the fans because she certainly doesn't need the money.
I'm bonkers about Harry Potter so I'm looking forward to this even though I'm in two minds. While I'm happy to hear we get some more insight into the world, I'm disappointed she didn't just leave it when it finished, but at least it's not about Harry.

Also they MUST include his grandson, Rolf. He marries Luna and I'll be over the moon to see more of her!

Well that's a stupid idea. Why not also adapt Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding into a movie as well?

Seriously, Fantastic Beasts is a short little thing that has paragraph or so long descriptions on a few fantasy animals. How do yo look at that and think to yourself "Yeah, that'll make a great movie!"?
I think it's going to be about Scamander 70 years before Harry was born, atleast that's what it says in the article :p.

Just what I was thinking. It seems most of the comments here are more along the lines of, "Harry Potter [something something] cash cow [something something] dead horse [insert cynical comment here]."

I get the impression most of these people have only roughly followed the movies, perhaps read one or two books, but certainly not the spinoffs (Fantastic Beasts, Quidditch Through The Ages, Tales of Beedle the Bard).

In any case, I'll continue to back anything J.K. Rowling gets behind; that woman is an amazing writer. Harry Potter has long been my favourite book series of all time (if the number of times I've re-read them are anything to judge), and I'm willing to let her keep adding to the world for a while yet.

Of course, I could well be wrong and the movie/game tie-in may fail miserably, but that's no reason not to give it a fair chance.

I can understand that. It certainly wasn't my cup of tea, but that's rarely an indicator of anything.
