The posts on the escapist against ACTA are astounding. Hatred and dislike flow from pretty much everyone. And sources about how terrible ACTA is come from every corner of the net. Except one. The actual legislation.

How many people here have actually read this? Or have formed such strong violent opinions based on what others have told you it means?

I feel this fear mongering and unreasoning mob mentallity of "all is DOOMED" has come far enough. Lets read together what this ACTUALLY says and decide logically how bad it really is without "slippery slope" fallacies and suchlike or people telling you the internet will be shut down forever. The escapist loves its hyperbole but it isnt a good way to talk about a serious issue. ACTA covers illegal file sharing and does NOT entitle anyone to view ANY personal information about you or in any way invade your hardware. ACTA is meant to prosecute chinese file sharers who make millions in stolen and distrubuted movies and songs, not people who commentate on youtube.

ACTA does VERY little harm compared so SOPA and most hatred is based on misconceptions so far. The internet is not dead. ACTA is NOT a form of censorship.

Lets make one thing clear; ACTA is poorly written. Under current circumstances TECHNICALLY youtube commentators and videos fall under its juristiction. However that is a technically. Its aimed at and written for large scale pirates. The seeds and medicine are not mentioned in the bill, im not sure where this arose from. If i have missed this please quote the treaty at me.

This actually doesnt give companies more power than they already had, it just encourages a crack down on real piracy and illegal activities. You think EA couldnt call out people posting in game footage without their permission? Of course they could. You think they care enough to actually try and do that? Of course not. This legislation just agrees that parties should try harder to deal with large scale software piracy. Nothing to do with you, or me or the internet censorship or anything.

The treaty actually works on the principle, and i quote, of "the economic loss suffered by the right holder" so youtube videos of games dont count at all toward this. No loss can be legally argued so the treaty has no effect.

Anyway this thread has a simple purpose, have you actually read what ACTA says? Has your opinion changed now you actually HAVE read the source? Do you think you deserve and can infact legitimately hold such a strong opinion without ever having read it?
