Has anyone ever tried using the search bar?

Often when a topic pops up for the billionth time there is always some idiot asking the age old question: "Have you never heard of the search bar?"

So I ask you:

Have you ever used the search bar?

I for one have a hard time finding what I am searching for, even when I know the topic is there, so can you blame people for not using it?

I can blame anyone for anything.

Case and point: I blame you for the fact I didn't have waffles today. You're a horrible person for that.

Anyways, no... I haven't, but I don't go around making threads either. I do use it to try and find something, though... very difficult unless I put the sentence in quotes.

I use it mostly to find people's profiles when I'm on the IRC, other then that I rarely use it unless I'm looking for an ancient (more then 2 weeks old) topic.

I have. A lot. You search for the title you were going to use, a few sets of keywords, and if nothing of vague relation comes up in the first three pages or so, you're good to go. It does take a bit of effort to be thorough, but it can't be more than two minutes or so.

If you're still unsure, then you could always pop your head in the IRC and ask if anyone's seen a "so and so" thread lately.

I don't use the search bar, but I do search the forums, much more likely to be helpful, but no guarantee.

Well, I have used it. Last time i used it, I was looking for a Zero Punctuation video, but didn't want to skim trough 10 pages of videos, so typed it in the search bar.

If we're talking about threads and topics, then I haven't used the search bar to be certain whether or not someone has already done such a topic. Why? because I haven't made a single thread. Don't really have anything that important or interesting to say/ask.

I've used to to search keywords when I'm thinking of making a thread. It works most of the time if you're vague enough.

I use the search bar. When I create a thread I want to know if somebody's made it already. Wouldn't want somebody to write "Use the search bar"

Not very often, then again after a time we would run out of creativity for 'new' threads. So it's not even that bad that things like 'Your favorite gaming music' Turns up like every week. Or the hate for fox news with every single game release. It's like a pub, you pretty much always talk about the same damn things yet it doesn't get boring because you have great people to interact with.

Then my second question is:

Does it matter if a topic comes up again? Of course its annoying if the same topic pops up every single day, or have multiple of the same topic on the first page. But sometimes a 10 page 10 weeks old topic on forum page 10 isn't really always worth reviving, so a new topic might be just as interesting for some people

PS: Love how someone searched for a million of my topic :p

I always use it before creating a thread, which is why I rarely create threads. FYI, there are two search bars. One for the Escapist as a whole, and one for the forums. Make sure to use the forum one, it even has filters for different forum types, where to search (OP, thread name and so on). There's really no excuse if you use the right tools.

PWN.

And for your second question, it doesn't really matter, but it's nice if you do. It's not exactly something that's against the rules, it's more of a user complaint.

Mostly because I have a hard time being able to bookmark and unmark certain threads so I dont bother anymore and just search the key words for the thread if I need to look back and have a giggle.

People will be amazed to see that using the search bar is actually a way lot easier than starting a whole new thread again. All the things they're wondering or want reccomending can simply be found in pages of disscussion if they simply type in and search what they actually want to know.
I dunno about the rest of you but I'm not writing on this sodding place just to be ignored. Ive written what I think of something, like many others have and starting a new thread about the exact same things is insulting to all of us.
Bottom line is, people who start threads which have been done far too often are either down-right lazy or disrespectful. And that's not an exagerration either. It is lazy and disrespectful to the people who bother writing for the community.

I do it for topics I think have been made. I do basic keywords to look for it then a three page manual check. If it passes both, I'll make the thread.

I don't when I'm posting, because I hate necroing/resurrecting old threads.

I do when I make a thread, but its been months since that's happened.

Exactly this.
Apart from the fact that it's been months since it happened, because you know. I'm quite new here.
And I have posted a topic in the last week. SO THERE.

There's a search bar? When did this happen? Did we get a vote in this? Why wasn't I made aware sooner?

I've only made a couple threads and I've used it every time. The search bar has been dumb at times by showing results that have nothing to do with the threads I'm searching for. Whenever I get the urge to make a new thread I'll use it again 'cause I really don't want to get that "don't know how to use the search bar?" or "this thread has been done :/" comments.

When looking for Videos and articles, yea. Pretty rare though as I much rather systematically watch/read random articles until I reach something interesting unless I have a specific video in mind.
I stopped trying to use the forum seachbar though cause for some reason, it gives me results from 2008/09.
