They say that and one other fear (eaten alive, I think) are the two fears inherent in humans. No matter who you are, you're automatically scared of those two.
For me, it depends on my fear. For example, I'm a huge arachnophobe (and I love Zelda. Ugh, bad combo), but I can't really see that impacting me in my future, so I just let it go. However, my fear of public speaking was one that just had to go, so I took a public speaking class in my high school. Teacher was a git, but my classmates were pretty cool, so that helped me. I'm no better at public speaking, but I'm at least not scared of it now.
