Has GTA lost its 'vibe'

The reason we loved GTA on PS2 was because it was fun, there were little or no games like it and it had untold amounts of replay value, not to mention 'mess about value' after you had saved the game, saving the game usually meant you could go haywire and do whatever the hell you liked because it wouldn't effect your save. CHEATS AHOY!

GTA4 took a more serious approach in an attempt to be more realistic to say? Feel free to argue against, this is just my perception of it. But this generation has been pretty tough, over the last few years we've seen sandbox games come and throw away every idea we've had of sandboxes since the genre began, every time we think we've seen it all and had all the generic fun we could have from a sandbox, a fallout comes along and kills that idea, or a Just Cause or a Red Dead.

Take Just Cause and Infamous for two prime examples, after playing these games, do you feel somewhat restricted when playing GTA4 again? Do you feel like it's just not as fun as it used to be? Simply because you can cause more mayhem and do more in these other games?

Say GTA5 were to do a GTA4 but in a different location, after playing Just Cause 2 which had all these possible locations stuffed into one megamap and every kind of vehicle possible, would you be that interested in picking up a copy of GTA5?

We don't really know.

They went back to some pretty crazy shit in Ballad of Gay Tony...

And GTA5 can be crazy again. We don't know anything about it. Saying that GTA lost it's 'vibe' after one game is quite a conclusion to rush to.

I loved all the GTA games, old and new. From 1 to 3 to 4.

The simple fix to GTA IV would be to:

a) Hire some proper writers if you want it to be serious
b) Have decent controls, it feels like Niko's walking through sludge
c) Not have an 8 hour tutorial

I don't think the relative seriousness (let's just never use the word 'realistic' next to GTA, not even after IV) was the issue.

GTA San Andreas on the PC is still one of my favourite games ever. I could go back and start playing it again right now. It's fun! The characters are cool and likeable, and the gameplay is great. I even downloaded a load of the songs that play on the in-game radio stations and burned them to cd to listen to in my car!

I have had GTA IV for the XBox 360 for about 2 years and have only completed a couple of levels, and doubt I will ever be bothered to actually play it through. It's just not fun or playable, and I just don't like the main character. We only keep it because my bf likes playing multiplayer.

The original GTA (the overhead view one) was fun for novelty value. Garanga!

GTA4 is easily my least favourite game in the series(and I've played them all)purely for the fact that you mentioned i.e it took a much more serious, sober approach(plus the vehicle handling was atrocious imo).If Rockstar is going to continue the series in this way then I highly doubt I'll be buying 5

Saint's Row 2 is the game GTA4 should have been

I cannot complain, why would I want to have GTA to become that crazy fun over the top game again if I have Saints Row for that. What if I want to play something more realistic?

Saints Row fills the crazy part of me while GTA fills the serious part. It is good that they are diferent from eachother.

GTA V needs a tank or its dead to me. Ill probably still buy it though... maybe unless the next saints row is really great, SR2 was fun.

Too bad that'll probably never happen. (And don't link and article saying otherwise because it's probably wrong.)

I always felt that GTA4 was very over-rated.

Don't get me wrong, it was a decent game but I felt it just lacked the x factor that previous GTA games had.

It had traded the fun, humour driven gameplay of previous games in the series for a gritty more emotional story that for me just didn't provide the same experience that other GTA games did.

There was also so much less to do in the world outside of the story compared to San Andreas. Being able to explore these remote areas, create chaos in a tank, steal a fighter jet or fly around with a jetpack alongside the variour other vehicles and gimmicks made for such an amazing opportunity to just muck around and cause mayhem.

For me it felt like all of this 'fun' had been dropped in favour of more realistic graphics, better physics and a more compelling story.

It was still a decent game, it just didn't feel like GTA anymore imo.

I'd have agreed with you up until Ballad of Gay Tony came out. If they kept that vibe I'd be happy.

Plus I discovered Saints Row just over a year ago and it kicks the Vice City/San Andreas stuff up to eleven, it was awesome.

So now for me if I want a somewhat serious gangster 'em up, I'll play GTA. If I want balls to the walls craziness, I'll boot up Saints Row.

I don't see the problem with GTA4. The sandbox element is still there. We really only go blow shit up and kill innocent people for fun anyway, and you can still do that in GTA4. Then you can go online and play with friends without the use of buggy mods. Ever block off both entrances to a burger shot and hold off against the swat teams? Good times.

I just wanted a working tow-truck and maybe some semis with large trailers.

I think other sandbox games have taken most elements from the GTA games, leaving us to think GTA has lost it's vibe. I played GTA 3 recently, and it just felt bland and uninspiring. This is because all other sandbox titles took elements like running around town stealing cars and running over people, and gave a it new makeover. I kind of pity GTA, because it's gameplay mechanics have been striped to the bone by other sandbox's.

Something we can all agree on.
The #1 question is usually vice city or san andreas.

I've never seen the huge appeal of GTA anyway.

Yes, killing random people is fun especially if you play the game with cheats, but I tend to just get bored after a few hours and not play again.

I loved GTA4, mostly because of how serious it was with the narrative. That said, it could probably use work on both narrative and fun mechanics, but Rockstar seems to have figured that out with RDR, so if they continued in the same direction with GTAV, I'd really have no problem with it.

I never enjoyed Vice City, Or San Andreas. Never played any of the older ones.

I did like GTA IV, being one of those people who actually likes realism in my games.
