By which I mean, you hear something so hyped up that it turns you off even giving it a chance. Or you do give it a chance but are very critical of everything it does from the word Go.

I know hype is never really considered a good thing in high doses, since you're likely to still enjoy it but it won't live up to your expectations. I'm talking absolute Overkill hype though!

For me personally, it's Doctor Who. I have never seen an episode of it nor do I know much about it, but I can't bring myself to even try. It has just been hyped up to such a ludicrious extent, that I refuse to believe it could be that good. I would have no choice but to watch it with ridiculous expectations (thanks to hype it is "OMG IT'S LIKE THE BEST THING EVER IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE") and no matter how good it really is, it will just disappoint me. I'm not even a big fan of science fiction so it already has to overcome that before it can impress me. I just don't think anything can be that good.

So, has hype ever completely turned you off something rather than made you want to partake in it?

All the time...generally, though, this involve ads that don't reflect the content very well, or are otherwise misleading.

It'd be faster to ask if hype has ever actually succeeded in increasing a person's anticipation of something.

The last time I can remember this happening was during the '08 elections. Yes, people Obama isn't Dubya and for that we should be thankful, but he isn't the fucking messiah come to bring peace on earth. He's a politician and even if he wants to do some good things, it's not like he won't have opposition.

But elections are a popularity contest ! ( Note that i don't vote for this very reason ).

OT: i don't really have an example , because i tend to avoid most things mainstream because i'm cool like that because things kinda lose their charm when everyone and their mother talks about it . Not that i don't like having a decent discussion about things , it's more like , when something is talked about by everyone , people just start making shit up , as well as just take the agree with popular opinion instead of thinking for themselves .

Far Cry 3. Everyone said it was Skyrim with guns, and I took this as a challenge and doubted it would be able to reach this claim. When I eventually did buy it I had much less fun as I found it simply was not Skyrim with guns- it was just Far Cry 2 but a bit different.

It's much more rare for hype not to turn me off. Mostly, hype seems to be aimed at some lowest common denominator, its tricks so transparent and disrespectful of my intelligence that even if I otherwise would have thought the product to be good, I end up disliking it out of spite.

I was like that with Inception and The Dark Knight Rises since I never went to watched them in the cinema. I guess I didn't fully understand why Inception will be awesome from the trailer and synopis before the release and I knew that The Dark Knight Rises will never surpass The Dark Knight. By all means I didn't expect it to be bad just not as good.

The Lord of the Rings movies. I keep hearing about how great they are, but I just have no interest in seeing them.
