A couple days ago, I got my regulars badge, and that means that I've been with the escapist for a whole year. The thought sort of inspired me, it got me thinking about how so much can change over what seems like a rather short period of time.

When I first came to the escapist, I was a weary refugee. For so long had I traveled to different forums, only to be chased away by their lousy grammar and their idiotic nature. And then I began to lurk here, right off the bat I was delighted to see that the people here respected the rules of halfway decent spelling and the power of being intelligent. And as I started to post here, I became even more overjoyed as I realized that they would not burn me at the stake and destroy my hopes and dreams because I was a newcomer. It seemed that I had finally found a forum to call home. Then they added the forums came the 'forum games and RP' section, and I was more than happy to spend most of my time in there, something I still do to this very day.

About a week later, I stumbled upon a thread where somebody I didn't know named 'Joe' stated that he was leaving. I was left alone in wondering who this person was, everybody around me was openly weeping and letting out dismayed cries at the thought of an Escapist without him. A few days passed, and life on the Escapist returned to what most people considered normal, nobody that was posting at the time, could possibly fathom the storm that was rapidly approaching.

About a month passed, and Trolls began to swarm the Escapist, covering our once great and intelligent and kindhearted forums with a sort of ectoplasm of dumb comments. I was just barely old enough to be considered a regular when this swarm started to arrive. So I watched in shock as our forums went into disarray, I watched in dismay as the mods where overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the demand of bans and morons that came to the escapist. With this storm, multiple 'bitching sessions' where had between the older escapist members, who were all desperate to get their old escapist back. These sessions always ended the same way, with the same things being said, by the same people. What nobody could have anticipated was that these Trolls would be cast off by the most unlikely and most powerful object in the world. It was time and patience, that got rid of the trolls.

The Escapist today is very different then the one that was here twelve months ago. We now have badges, our own browser game, a shiny new background, and even a webby. All of these things inspire to me to believe that the Escapist has a very bright future ahead of it. And I am more than happy to stick around for the ride.

Thank you for a great year, here's hoping there's more to come

Thank God there are people out there who don't think the Escapist is doomed. I realise I'm still relatively new here, but the number of people who complain about the state of the site still surprises me. It must have really been a utopia beforehand, because it's the most troll-free site I've found. I think I could name three people at most who could legitimately be considered trolls (I'm not naming names).

Whatever people may say, this is still one of the best communities on the Internet. With any luck I'll be here for long enough to get that Regular badge as well.

I've not been here long either. And I mean, a really short time. And I already love it here. :D
It's not the first literate forum I've come across, but it is the most cold-hearted. I mean that in a good way, however. There's no special treatment for new members. If you say something stupid, you'll find out pretty quickly.
My favourite section is the Review Section. I like reading their reviews, and I like the constructive criticism I get from mine. :)

There's something about it, isn't there? I consider this place my internet home now. My sort of safe zone.

Congratulations on your shiny new badge!

It's interesting to watch how the place changes over time. The fluctuations of character and users, what's popular, what's reviled. Some things stand the test while others fade.

Here's to another year of hilarity. And many more to follow.

Your 2nd paragraph reflects EXACTLY how I felt coming here. Though of course I haven't been here as long as you. I love the Escapist, to the extent that, when there was downtime for the new layout upgrades (or whatever), I thought the Internet felt empty.

A toast: To The Escapist!

PS: to the veterans: who was Joe?

He's an RP forum regular. I don't often see him outside of there, but that's not to say he doesn't pop his head in from time to time.

As for your OP, Toughie, I have to agree. I hear people whining about how the forums are "going downhill" and "aren't what they used to be", and I keep saying the same thing. Yes, they've change, but that doesn't mean they're any better or worse. It means that they're different. I hear people saying "There's less intelligent discussion", and I respond in kind, pointing out that it's not less intelligent discussion, just more discussion that is below what they consider "intelligent". There's still the same amount of "intelligent discussion", it's just being diluted amongst a larger amount of other discussion. It's like, if you put a drop of food coloring into a paper cup full of water, it'll change the color more than it would in a coffee mug full of water. As we become more popular and grow, more people will be attracted to the site. Which isn't a reason to just ragequit, as some people have been doing, because "the forums are getting dumberer", but instead is a reason to step up your own conduct, and show the new members what you expect. Lead by example. If you see someone being stupid, PM them and offer suggestions, don't just say "You're being stupid, shut up." Offer suggestions on how to better their posting. Constructive criticism.

Ooh, I very rarely visit those parts. I may have to drop in now.

I must have arrived just after the creation of badges - didn't realize they had only just been implemented. I joined a day after the OP - yet I don't recall the same wave of trolls you appear too - maybe I believed that was the norm. on forums - I can't be certain; oh well - it'll be my Escapist anniversary next week...thats kind of depressing - I've spent over a year posting on the same forums...

-I never thought of it that way before. Happy 1, Sarge.

And along your worry of past and future, we both assert that patience will be the only amendment to whatever bad-may came of whatever may come.

As far as I can tell (I was pretty new myself when he left) he was kind of the chief mod. In at least one of the forums there's a guidelines sticky that was written by him.

I couldn't resist...

Congrats on your 1-year anniversary Sargent. It's been fun times with you on here. Here's to you.

Interesting. I joined about a month later than you. And I don't really know what you're talking about. I think I remember those trolls, but I think I was too new to know what the Escapist was like before them. Also, if I recall correctly, though I joined the Escapist in July I didn't start posting very regularly for awhile, so I may have just missed them.

Before the Escapist, I just accepted the abuse of the English language and idiocrisy present in most other forums as normal. Which is why I was so shocked when I saw the Escapist; I didn't know such places existed. After gazing in interest at the topics that showed up in the little forum activity box for a while, I remember the thread that finally made me join: it was some sort of religious/philosophical debate. Philosophical debates? On the internets? I had to join in. And join in I did. Only to discover that those debates were being held by you people.

...And I loved it. What, did the italics make it sound like I'm accusing you?
