A couple days ago, I got my regulars badge, and that means that I've been with the escapist for a whole year. The thought sort of inspired me, it got me thinking about how so much can change over what seems like a rather short period of time.
When I first came to the escapist, I was a weary refugee. For so long had I traveled to different forums, only to be chased away by their lousy grammar and their idiotic nature. And then I began to lurk here, right off the bat I was delighted to see that the people here respected the rules of halfway decent spelling and the power of being intelligent. And as I started to post here, I became even more overjoyed as I realized that they would not burn me at the stake and destroy my hopes and dreams because I was a newcomer. It seemed that I had finally found a forum to call home. Then they added the forums came the 'forum games and RP' section, and I was more than happy to spend most of my time in there, something I still do to this very day.
About a week later, I stumbled upon a thread where somebody I didn't know named 'Joe' stated that he was leaving. I was left alone in wondering who this person was, everybody around me was openly weeping and letting out dismayed cries at the thought of an Escapist without him. A few days passed, and life on the Escapist returned to what most people considered normal, nobody that was posting at the time, could possibly fathom the storm that was rapidly approaching.
About a month passed, and Trolls began to swarm the Escapist, covering our once great and intelligent and kindhearted forums with a sort of ectoplasm of dumb comments. I was just barely old enough to be considered a regular when this swarm started to arrive. So I watched in shock as our forums went into disarray, I watched in dismay as the mods where overwhelmed and unable to keep up with the demand of bans and morons that came to the escapist. With this storm, multiple 'bitching sessions' where had between the older escapist members, who were all desperate to get their old escapist back. These sessions always ended the same way, with the same things being said, by the same people. What nobody could have anticipated was that these Trolls would be cast off by the most unlikely and most powerful object in the world. It was time and patience, that got rid of the trolls.
The Escapist today is very different then the one that was here twelve months ago. We now have badges, our own browser game, a shiny new background, and even a webby. All of these things inspire to me to believe that the Escapist has a very bright future ahead of it. And I am more than happy to stick around for the ride.
Thank you for a great year, here's hoping there's more to come
