It all depends on the game obviously, right?

By the way, what does the nationality of the 12 year old matter? Their prepubescent voices are all equally annoying.

Depends on what the "point" is.

If the point is to have fun with friends, not really. You could say that now everyone plays online instead of playing with friends, but that's like saying people don't spend as much time together anymore because they can just text each other. Texting happens because it's simpler and easier, but friends won't pass up opportunities to actually hang out just because it takes more effort. Same for playing online.

If the point is competition, video games haven't really gotten there yet anyway. A few games are taken seriously as competition in small circles (or Korea), but we're not yet to the point of being recognized as a legitimate form of competition.

Either way, I'd say no. It's changing, but not losing its point.

Online sportsmanship and maturity have become something akin to the Dodo these days.
Today, I either play with friends or I don't bother.

I prefer offline multiplayer but the sessions are hard to come by so i am grateful for the experience online multiplayer provides me with.
I ignore XP and the likes when im having a good, fun, match. When i've had a boring, depressing match the XP can cheer you up a bit.

I've yet to see a competitive online game that didn't deserve to be wiped from the face of the Earth.

Its a lot different then when we were kids, I don't have to call my friends up have them get driven or drive over. We just all get online and play games. games don't even really do split screen anymore so there's no point anyway.

When I played Live years back, frequently the game's online portion was so highly geared towards people being the best with the most achievements, perks, skills, rankings, and so on if you were not playing with friends. While some level of competitiveness has its place, quite often the whole purpose of the game's multiplayer ends up going overboard. While the rankings do serve a role in helping players of similar skill play together, it would be interesting to see if people were not at one another's throats as often if just a friendly match was at stake.

It hasn't lost its point. Just its heart. It still has what it set out to do- offer the ability for two people to directly challenge eachothers' skills, so the spirit's still there.

I've found that private lobbies have replaced a lot of my splint-screen gaming. I can play a 4-way game of Call of Duty or play a co-op adventure game without having to drive all the way to my friends house.
