Hey, that's the same reason people give for hating on The Yankees. (*please note: comment made in jest*)

I don't really see much that's wrong with Canada it's a beautiful place to live, especially in British Colombia, the landscape is amazing. Only thing i don't like about Canada is their government. They have a bit too much control over things. But other then that, it's awesomez

Its because one of my friends is an American who NEVER SHUTS UP about Canada. I learned to just listen to him and let him have his thunder.

Damn. You must physically have to fend off the hate waves every moment of your life.

Alas, the Canadiens only have 24 titles to their name.

Oh yeah. That's a good one. Worlds first telegrah radio message to go across the atlantic. Was sent from....... You guessed it. CANADA. Also were a member of the G8. If that dosen't make us a world power, I don't know what dose.

All in all, Canada is like the unrepresented little brother. Where everybody's so focused on the great things the big brother is doing.

LOL.

Sorry, I don't even know why I'm laughing per se, but I, in all honesty, did.

It's probably the dig at the government, and mostly because of the irony of claiming that the government has too much control, when the government in power is right-wing (or at least right wing on the canadian spectrum).

Canada's awesome, and the lot of you yanks would be privaledged to live here. Srsly.

Maybe it's because we all live in igloos and eat whale blubber. I mean, who wants to do that?

People don't like the accent. The whole "aboot" vs "about" debacle. I don't mind Canada.
Funny thing is theres likely 1 person in all of Canada who actually says "aboot" not in a joking manner.

Because they have almost NOTHING that makes them somewhat relevant to anyone?
They aren't a world power, they don't export anything in large amounts I.E. China/Mexico
They have no great inventions or discoveries.

In short, they are the weird chubby kid on the play ground that is the world, they are noticeable enough to get picked on, but not enough to be of any actual interest to anyone.... Plus they are Canadian, and be honest here, who DOESN'T like making fun of them?
Hey, liking all of those natural resources, like water and lumber? Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooots of water and lumber.

Lived here my entire life, love it here. Only once did I ever talk to someone who really didn't like Canada. I worked at a call centre that was employed by an American cable company.

Got a caller once, asked where I was, I told him "eastern Canada". Lets just say that he decided that he was going to rant for a half hour about how Canada was a horrible place to be and how southern texas was such a better place to live and how we didn't have eletricity, or summer, or blah blah blah blah. I just said "At least we got health care. Although to get a doctor where I live, it's half an hour of dogsled ridding. It's better if I just ride my polar bear to the closest hospital."

He replied "What the hell you talking about? You don't even have hospital's up there! god dam beaver lover!"

Then he hung up. Best phone conversation I've ever had at that call centre.
Thats actually pretty epic. Love it when I can get gullible people to believe I live in an igloo.

I personally don't mind Canada at all. They seem to be nice enough even though America has tried invading them like 4 times.
...what? I think you tried once, and we burned down your pink house.

Your welcome :p

Although in all seriousness that was the natives and the loyalists who would go on to form Upper and Lower Canada, who then would form the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, who would sign a constitution with Nova Scotia and...fuck the eastern provinces blend into one. Fuck....NEW BRUNSWICK, thats it.

I think I can illuminate a few of the (rational) reasons behind the (irrational) hatred of Canada.

1. Politically, we operate on social democratic principles, meaning that the government's job is to take care of its citizens (within reason). This is done through public health care, the welfare state, etc. That means that every American knee-jerk right-winger and his dog calls us socialist commies for no other reason then uninformed dickishness.

2. Sealing is an important part of the economy for the northern and eastern provinces. Which means (American) pro-animal nuts like PeTA stalk and harass our politicians, for the sake of the cute, widdle sealies.

3. Our comedians are funnier. You know its true.

4. Canada has been dragging its feet as far as the environment goes. The rage here is valid, we're just as pissed off at our politicians as you (Americans) are.

5. Canadians think we're better than Americans. Really, it's a national identity. Don't believe me? "Vancouver Winter Olympics Men's Hockey." "Rick Mercer's Talking to Americans." Look either up.

However, there is a greater evil in the Great White North/America's Hat. It is the monster that resides within Prime Minister Stephen Harper's sweater. Seriously, Google "Harper's Sweater" it's good for a laugh.

Edit: Was briefly considering posting a counter-thread "Hate for America" but...the last thing we need is for the Escapist servers to go boom.

It's because Americans are so bored that we've got nothing better to do.

No really, I have no idea. Possibly because they're still part of the British Commonwealth and all us Americans are secretly jealous.

I think people expect us to be like the U.S, but we're not. We're smaller, more quiet, and more peaceful. I think that confuses people. Then...what do I know? I live in Canada.

Its national anthem is frankly terrible.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

It just doesn't scan. It is all over the place.

Why on God's green earth would I? Unless the government makes me so full of loathing for what my country has become I don't think I'd ever leave.
