Okay, let me explain how this came about. The other day, it kind of dawned on me that, while I absolutely cannot stand country music by itself, the second you mix country music with another genre of music, I generally really like it. Country/Blues, Country/Soul, Country/Crooning, Rockabilly, Country/Orchestral like the Serenity soundtrack, even Country/Funk. I like all these things, yet can't stand Country on its own, or I guess what you'd call popular country music.

So, why is this in Gaming Discussion? Because I was wondering "What is the 'Country Music' of video games?" is there any genre or sub-genre of video games that you personally cannot stand on its own, but really enjoy when it's a part of something else?

I came up with an answer for myself - Third Person Shooters. I cannot stand Third Person Shooters when that's all they do. I played Gears of War and couldn't stand it, because that was all it did, and the TPS mechanics are largely what killed my enjoyment of games like Red Faction: Guerrilla. But, a lot of games I really enjoy are TPS hybrids. Mass Effect. If you choose to play it in 3rd person, and I often did, Fallout 3. GTA and Saints Row 2 (although the actual missions where you have to get in gunfights are always my least favourite part of those games). Depending on how far you stretch the definition of TPS, I could probably include a lot more games, but I've said my part.

So, how about you, Escapists? Is there a genre of game that you don't like, but actually quite enjoy when it's mixed in with something else?

I normally dislike shooters, but I liked borderlands and Mass Effect and Call of Duty: whatever lets you gain experience. So... I guess throw an exp bar and a skill tree in it and I'll suddenly not dislike it as much!

Also I like bagels with cream cheese, but not plain bagels.

So very much this. Without cream cheese it's just a fucking ordeal to eat. As for games, I don't know I've never tried to eat a disc.

But seriously, I don't know. I just needed to quote this guy and his bagels.

RPGs. I love Mass Effect and Oblivion and the like, but I can't help but think that "proper" RPGs where everything is based purely on your stats would just be Fa-ha-ha-king dull.

I hate puzzle games on their own. Boring and whatnot. However, incorporate FPS elements (portal, duh) or RPG elements and I'll be more likely to enjoy it.
