I still can't get a job. I have applied at few jobs and not even one call back, this was even when they were hiring.

Ì'm having trouble right now. I've been fairly well employed as a journalist until recently, keeping above the curve in terms of the decline of the newspaper. So now I'm a part time journalist looking for a part time or better employment elsewhere. Even fast food joints are getting stingier because they have so many people applying.

Unskilled, part-time not so much if you know what to look for and aren't picky. It also helps to know your boss, if possible, and all the other businesses that your job might deal with on a regular basis. Skilled work, well, I still don't think I qualify for any jobs like that, yet. I've been cooking in kitchens since I was in high school, and have been riding the experience of that for jobs to help pay through University, rather than as a career- thats what internships and other things are for.

Experience is the biggest thing right now, though, I think.
I was working at the Convention Center here in the city up until a week ago when I was laid off, surprisingly, when they had to cut back in just about every area. Though, I was lucky enough to talk to my boss and some HR people and they gave me the references and recommendations to this big Hyatt that they regularly did business with- got a job with them 8 days after I was laid off.

PS.
I think these days there are too many people that are going to University when they really should work on just working and getting a stable career going, one that a College Degree probably wouldn't be beneficial to them in the first place. Some really do need it and want to pursue that, of course- but I've met so many people on campus that are on academic probation because they just dont really care- and I know other people that graduate and just go into a simple Corporate Job at Target, or something- yet they still have the ~$50k in loans (if theyre lucky) to pay off in a job that really wasn't worth the time in college, it seems.

1st job: Sonic, hired on spot.

2nd job: Wal-Mart, applied for the night shift and met the manager in-store at 2AM. Hired after interview.

3rd job: Best Buy, applied for seasonal work, hired after interview. Two days into the job, Circuit City calls about a follow up interview; I apologize and turn em down...Good choice in retrospect.

4th job: Wal-Mart in different state. Pull on references from Best Buy and Wal-Mart, called about my application after three days, hired after interview.

Mostly unskilled/low hanging fruit here, but I was able to pick and choose my soulless corporations. We have a lot of people around here buying their Mercedes with the welfare check, though. Maybe I'm on the sore end of the deal.

Also, I have my own cycle of failure. GREAT impression, bouncy cheerful service, and fast work. Then, after about three months, management cuts off the fun parts of the job, and productivity takes a corresponding dive. I get bored and either quit or get fired.

I sprinted around Best Buy delivering computers to ticket holders on Black Friday without so much as a close call, and that was fine, but January rolls around and I can't so much as walk quickly. Guys, if it didn't happen on Black Friday, it's not happening.

Absolutely. I have a Bachelor's degree too.

Luckily I can freelance in the meantime. It would be nice to get something a little more permanent.
Freelance? What's your major and what are you freelancing in?

Am I the first person to say no? Granted, I got my first job way before the recession started, and I have five years of experience in my career to back me up, but I had no problem getting a job.

Now, transferring. That's a different kettle of fish.

EDIT: I live in Colorado currently, and am moving to Illinois. But in my field, there's so much turnover that I can be confident in finding a place wherever I want to go.
Yeah I'm not sure this is the kind of thread you walk into and brag about how much money you make or what great job security you have...

But since I'm here, I haven't NOT had a job since I was 15. It's 10 years later and I've moved from New York to Virginia to Minnesota to Texas, still employed. Working online might have something to do with that.

Dude, I work for Starbucks. I make next to no money, but I'm a trained, qualified, certified barista. Employers like mine are generally too lazy to want to train newbs for anything but manager positions (seriously, they hire managers right off the freaking street), so anyone with training is pretty high up in the hiring queue.

Let's see... Graduated June 2004 as something of an industrial jack-of-all-trades, got my first real job early in 2005, as a service electrician for Volvo. Got fired in early 2007, managed to get a job from a friend's father, building boats. Had to quit 6 months later, since the dust were slowly killing me.

Then recession struck, and I've been out of a job since then, but I applied and got accepted into a training program for future specialist electricians, where my area is security systems and installation. Hoping to finish this spring.

Now if all those guys of age 64+ would please retire so that my generation can actually get some work experience...

Edit: Oh right! I have applied fore more then 400 jobs the last 2 years. I've had like 7 interviews. Recession sucks ass, even here in Sweden.

I sure have been having trouble. Ive noticed that as i am an 18 year old male most people wont consider me because of the bad reputation generation Y has in the workforce. Everyone just assumes i'm another dropkick stoner. Thankfully my application to get into that army is going well.

Any job I apply for never answers me back. I know I'm only 17 but they are just small part-time jobs and they are really low on help. I've sent in like 6 and still not even a call to tell me somebody else got the job.

I was 23 I think before my mom, my MOM, got me my first job. It's not easy. I'm 28 now, and after I graduated from school with a crap degree and got married I had to have my wife( a nurse) get me free training at the nursing home she worked at as a Nursing Assistant. 3.8 GPA college graduate working as a glorified butt wiper at $10/hour. It was nasty, demeaning, and back breaking work.

I went back to school into a computer related program. I tutored other students in some classes on my own time, as well as working, and impressed my teachers. A job opened up at the school working in one of the on campus computer labs as an "instructional aide and computer tech". I told all of my teachers I wanted it, and they put in a good word for me. I also ace'd the two man interview, and got the job on campus. I just quit my butt wiping job, and start my new one in a couple weeks when classes start again. Feels good man.

Yeah, I'm 20 and looking for work and it's not been easy. I've been out of work since July and I've been applying for 4 jobs a week, usually getting 1 interview a week. It's hard to find a place that will take me without experience though.

I've been trying to find a job but I don't have the courage to up to someone at an establishment and ask if they're hiring. I just feel so depressed when they say no because part of me thinks they said no just to keep the job from me.

So I usually get friends to help me put resumes in places but still no calls. Its like they looked me up on facebook, saw my face, and realized that I'm the guy everyone agreed to keep from getting a job. Or maybe I'm paranoid...

It's not that hard if you don't care what you get, just try and get some work thru a temp agency, factory work pays well, and sometimes you can get nice hours, that work for you, rather then landing yourself in a job you can't work at because of Schedual.

The best thing to remember, is be upfront about your college schedual if you go out of your way to make sure they know, and they still want you, then they will try and get you hours that you can work. If not, keep trying. Also, remember some colleges have work available for students if you sign up for it.

I applied for Air Traffic Controller civilian and Air Force. Both knocked me back for lack of leadership / life experience.

Applied as secondary school teacher. Got the job on my 2nd callback. Simple enough.
